Hey there, long time reader first time poster. I finished my swap not that long ago, but I hit a bit of a snag with my swap. I overlooked(ignored) a small detail but it’s potentially a big one since I need it to pass emissions (California) .
to my understanding if the 2nd gen 4Runner was a federal and the engine was a federal the swap wouldn’t be a problem. The issue is putting in an engine from a federal to a Cali based vehicle is not allowed .
Back when I started this swap I didn’t really care about getting “passed“ because I’ve done it in the past. Call it what you will but whether it’s being older and wiser and trying to do things by the book, I’m looking at doing this swap legitimately now. My only issue is finding a MT ECU that is from California. I can piece together an engine from the junkyard to get it going.
I guess what I’m trying to say is I need some help finding an ECU. If you or anyone you know has one that Would like to part out or sell off it would be greatly appreciated. Anyone with knowledge of what part numbers to look for would also help as well.
Again, if this kind of post isn’t allowed here please let me know, I’m pretty new to forums and posting, thank you for any help you can send my way!
When I recently decided to 3.4 swap my pickup, I had pretty dismal luck finding a proper ECU also. Anything close to what I needed was $500+ on ebay. I ended up in contact with offroadsolutions.com, and they found an ECU for my application for half that. I would definitely recommend giving them a call and explaining your situation. Seems like they have good sources for 3.4 ECUs. The 2 guys I talked to were both very knowledgeable, helpful, and patient.
