Well, I don't know how much my tests will help, but here goes: Stock cooling system, Hayden 1678 Transmission Cooler, 170deg. NAPA Thermostat.

I drove around a little bit this past weekend and did a little dynamic testing to see what my coolant temps are. They are all for an ambient temperature of 54-58F, so unfortunately cooling was not an issue that day (nor will it be for any other day the rest of the winter)... but I will be driving 600 miles from here to Tucson this coming weekend, so I'll keep an eye on temps in Tucson too since it will be hotter there.

Los Alamos, Ambient 54-58F
Stationary idle: 190F
In-town 35mph cruising: 178-181F
On-highway, 65mph: 178-181F
Steep Downhill, engine braking, 45mph: 170F
Steep uphill, 55mph: 185F

As far as I saw, the "driving temperature" never got above 185, even hauling ass up hill with OD off and a couple PSI of boost. We can thank the ambient temps for that We can also see the thermostat actually closed when I was going downhill and engine braking... So like I said, this probably won't be that useful other than the fact that my in-town and highway coolant temps are pretty much identical. The idle temp will obviously drop with the addition of an e-fan as well. I wish I had a tranny temp gauge to see that too, but for now all I can say is I have a Hayden 1678 cooler in front of the radiator. Hope this helps a little.

On a side note, I discovered my BR3 OBD-II Scantool also does mileage... I will be using that and compare to see how accurate it is when I drive to Tucson. Toys are fun

Thanks Brian that helps a lot.

I drove some today and the highest I got was 187. That was with ambient temps around 65 and doing some WOT driving.

The fan still runs on the highway, I kind of expected that since I haven't opened up the shroud yet.

Sounds like we might be making some progress then! :knockonwood:

Sounds like you may be narrowing it down Dale, did you ever order (and if so - did you receive) thos little flaps for the fan shroud?

Yeah I got 12 of those flaps, they are thinner than I was expecting:

Also got the logo right side up, I probably wouldn't have noticed it. So much for attention to detail :

Flaps

I thought the same thing with the flaps, but they'll help with the free-flow.

I guess you just have to be carefull not to make the holes too big huh? What size holes did you make?

B18, it's from a 2001 Taco, no Dyno in the plans. It runs like a bat out of hell compared to my 3.0. My first tank of gas I got about 13 mpg but I was doing a lot of testing at WOT and it is running pretty rich at WOT (around 10).

BTW I've tried to lean it out to about 12 at WOT but changing the FTC fuel map numbers in that boost range-rpm range hasn't helped. I've gone from 9.9 and 10 to 9.6 with no appearant change to the A/F ratio.

Started the fan shroud flap install by making a layout pattern out of a piece of plastic:

I drills holes at all the corners:

And used a cutoff wheel on a die grinder to cut out the squares:

I should have ordered more flaps because I cut lots of holes:

I made 5 or 6 more flaps out of some pond liner rubber from Lowes , I now really appreciate those little flaps because they lay nice and flat and are easy to install. My home made flaps don't lay flat.

Here they are all in place:

Sorry no time to test it out yet. Would have been a good day to test too, 83 degree record high for Nov 9, but ran out of time.

Well I got to test out the flaps today. It was about 70 degrees and the fan still runs on the highway. The hottest temp I got was 190 degrees with the fan running at highway speed. At one point I switched the fan off just to see if it really needed to run and the temp went up to 196 within a mile or so cruising at 70mph. Most of the slower city driving the fan seemed to run a little more than before but the temps stayed around 185.

I'll have to see what happens when it gets hot next summer. :pat: I'm a little disappointed, I really thought the flaps would help.

I wonder if lots of guys have their fan running on the highway and just don't know it. The only reason I even know it's running is because of the DCC output LED. I would never be able to hear it running with all the road/engine noise at 70 mph.

Mine runs on the highway....course its a mech fan. lol. Im to lazy to do the e-fan swap. I keep thinking about it, but just dont do it. lol. Looks like the flaps would have helped, and even if they didn't...look at it this way, at least you have a very unique fan shroud. lol. Keep it up Dale.

Interestingly enough I am having the same problem temps are very good in the city and on the highway up around 195. I think it might be my rad though.

Mech fans of course do turn on the highway. Without my taurus fan on the highway I would slowly overheat. IIRC you are running somewhere around 300hp with this engine? If so I'll bet your just pushing the limits of the cooling system. On powerblock this weekend they had an aluminum rad with built in e-fan that they were installing on the comaro IIRC, that might be what you need to do at this point. Remember every engine and install is different and yours very much so. I wouldn't be surprised if you need some considerable cooling upgrades.

IDK if it would help with a SC or if you have one but what about an intercooler? Not much roor for one though is there.

Hummm.... interesting, thanks for the info. I don't have an intercooler, it would take massive rebuilding of the SC manifold to do that. I do have water injection though which kicks in around 4.5-5 psi of boost to cool the intake temps down.
