3.4 Swap on 2nd Generation
Sorry for the complete newbie question here, but would like to know more about doing a 3.4 Swap on a 2nd Generation 4Runner.
I really prefer the body style of the 2nd Generation, but all this headgasket talk has me worried out of my wits. If I were able to find a good solid body and transmission wanted to put the 3.4L in, would it be worth it?
Where is a good place to look for the engines? What am I talking in cost to pay for the engine and install?
Am I better off just getting a 1996 or newer truck?
Thanks

One of the better resources. Helped me a ton with my swap.

It is only a matter of time.... My 3.0 lasted till 227K (And it had the factory re-call-rebuild) TC's is at 235 and we know it is inevitable for him too....
It is expensive though, but the write-ups here are amazing and make it do-able!
Oh and I am moving this thread to the 3.4 swap folder.

Worth it depends on what you are planning on doing with the 4runner, I am in the process of doing my own swap, for me I am shopping around and getting a few good deals. When I added it up I decided that it was worth the money. But I'm not done it yet so we will after all is said and done. Here are some more links you may find useful...

I just did my swap on mine. As for cost...
Are you able to do this yourself? If so it is a great learning experience.
As far as costs go, you will have to factor in the motor/associated parts and misc items you may need. If you are planning on having a shop do this then you will have to account for labor.
Read up on all the links posted, there is some good information out there.
you will need a small body lift or a hood scoop if you don't want the motor to dent your hood. I didn't do either, and the motor will clear, i do have some small dents in the hood but i don't really mind.
BTW.... My 3.0L lasted 258,000 miles with the original head gaskets, went through a fire, and after i got it, driven like hell. I say it was a good run.
