I've got 2 1/4" as well and a high flow cat and a pretty decent muffler. It's not silent and sounds pretty good up to about 4000 RPM then the vibrations start rattling.

Yeah, the exhaust noise is going be pretty loud in the cab if your system exits under the vehicle.

Does anybody know about a wiring switch that took place between 90 and 91? It's frustrating the crap out of me.

I have the same question . I've installed 3 different mufflers over four years on my swapped 4Runner and still cant find a good tone from the exhaust. Magnaflow, Menike turbo, and now Flowmaster on my 2.5" exhaust all sound like crap.
Maybe Jardine next I dunno.

O.k not to sound like I am but I am color blind.... that being said all of this wiring makes a MAJOR problem for me.

Is there a wiring diagram that shows what wire in the 3.0 connector does what, so the 3.4 connector can be pulled one by one and reconnected without screwing myself up totally?

If I am looking at this correctly the major problem with this swap is the wiring? Well the mechanical problems are really not problems, just need a little common sense. I am very confident in my mechanical ability thats not a problem. I recently about 3,000 miles ago rebuilt the 3.0 in my '88 and am totally disgusted with the lack of grunt. Looking at this swap its much easier than a SBChevy and should cost ALOT less.
Also there are very few upgrades for the 3.0 (that cost an arm and a leg), and there seems to be many upgrades for the 3.4 that seem to be more cost effective for the power returned .
I have had very few complaints with the reliability of my 3.0, the reason for the rebuild was self inflicted, the piston rods seem to bend when water is sucked into the compression chamber

Is there a dummyproof fix for this sort of issue?

blast from the pastt!

so the overall outcome of this was to take the smaller gauge b/w wire from the starter and splice it into the bigger gauge b/w wire that is located in the fuse box under the hood that goes to the starter relay?

thanks

Man this thread is all over the place

Flaunt.....what exactly is your issue?

For the starter circuit, you will have a large black/white wire in the kick panel. That is FROM the ignition switch and is hot when the key is cranked. You will need to run your own wire from the SMALL terminal on the starter, into the kickpanel, and join it with that larger wire. Also, in that splice you need to extend a small wire that will join to the STA terminal off the ECM.

If you search around I made a terrible picture kinda showing everything. I can t remember which thread though.

in the passenger kick panel where the ECM goes?..

i thought it was in the hood fuse box where it was labeled starter for the relay, because there it has that same bigger b/w wire.

so look for the starter circuit in the passenger kick panel?

thanks!

Thats where I got mine.

I never messed with a single wire under the hood that I can recall. Everything that I needed was in the passenger kick panel. Yes, where the ECM goes.

That is your Circuit Opening Relay. down lower you should have two more plugs, those are your body harness plugs, that splice with the engine harness, and ecm.

Exactly. that blue wire in the plug you have highlighted is the wire that run to your fuel pump by the way. You will run a relay from the FP terminal on the ECM to that blue wire. I believe it has a white stripe but I could be wrong......AGAIN USE A RELAY!!

As to the starter wire Hamish exactly right as usual. Lower. Larger wire than the rest......like 12 ga.....maybe 14. Will be hot when key is turned to start.

I am betting it is this:
T 2 2−4 Select Motor

That is the farthest back plug on the tranny that is on the driverside. Did that tranny come with the manual 4wd shifter? or the 4wd switch...

*edit. Or one of these:
D 3 Detection SW (Transfer L4 Position)
D 4 Detection SW (Transfer Neutral Position)

But I am pretty sure both 4wd plugs are greenish/blue. So the only other possibility is the neutral position switch???

I got that from a 99 4runner schematic. So the wire colors may be off. I found it in the drivetrain section, file 036EA-5VZFE.pdf.

So hopefully you have all of the EWD's for your donor year, and you can find that pdf. the screen shot was from the first page of the pdf.

cheers!
