3.0 to 3.4 swap help

Hey just signed up for yotatech but I have been reading it forever. It has the best information I could ever fine. Anyway I have a 1991 Toyota pickup xtra cab 3.0 5 speed but got the engine out now. I want to swap in a 3.4 from a t-100 or Tacoma engine. I know there are tons of threads on this but it's hard for me to search every little thing. I am just wanting to know everything that needs to be swapped. I know wiring does obviously but what else must be swapped? Also I am doing an sas so what oil pan? And what is the tachometer resistor thing that you do with the swap? Any better year 3.4 to get? How about headers also for the 3.4 any noticeable difference with headers and intake? Thanks sorry I know tons of questions. 3.4 out of a 5 speed too

Read the stickies at the top of the forum section.

Each swap is unique but the fundamentals are the same and the stickies contain all the answers to your questions.

Unfortunately no one is going to tell you everything you need to know. If you don't have the time to read these stickies and other swaps, you won't have time for this swap. Don't be in a hurry. Read read read. We're here for you when you have specific questions that haven't been covered 100 times.

Ok how about this. I can get a 3.4 v6 with 158k runs good for $450. Is that good? It come with complete motor harness. Is it not worth because of how much more I would need?

I wouldn't ever piece a swap together. No matter the cost of the motor. There is too much extra frustration of making pieced out components work together. I haven't even mentioned the cost compared to buying a whole doner. I say nope.

What vehicle is that engine came out of? If you can find the ECU from the same yr, you're in business. You do have to do a lot of research. It's not impossible. I did it by piecing things together. I can not have a carcass sitting out in front of my house.

The motor is out of a 1999 4 runner. Says he has the harness with it too and everything.

But is that a 5 spd too? You're gonna need a manual ECU and wiring diagram for auto and manual. The auto is to mark all the wires, the manual is to re-pin them to match the manual ECU plugs.

Make sure you can get the whole EVAP system from the 99 truck if you need to pass the CA smog ref.
I have two extra manual ECU. One for the 97-98 three row connectors 2WD and one for the 95/96 two row connectors with EGR monitor and 4x4.
I don't know if you can use it or not... PM me.

You should have it evap through your old charcoal tank at least. I think the evap gas is flamable so you might take some precaution with how it evap out. You do have a spark source...the starter.

Okay cool. Well found out it was from an auto. He also says he probably has a heavy duty clutch/ flywheel setup that will work with this swap? Should I jump on that? Thanks

I found another engine and 5speed tranny for 500. But has no harness or anything. Which is better just the motor with harness? Or motor and tranny? Both near the same mileage. Also should I just get a toy only swaps harness? What else would I need after I get the harness from them?

Call them and ask.

I still wouldn't do a swap without the whole vehicle.

The Toy Only Swap (and ORS) harness only a conversion harness that connects the 3.0L body harness to the 3.4L engine harness, it does not replace it. You will 100% still need a 3.4L engine harness and ECU.

I didn't get a whole donor, but I was able to work with a guy parting out 4Runner and got EVERYTHING I needed or thought I needed and everything he (and his mechanic buddy) thought I would need. Granted I've had some unforeseen issues with the motor itself, I got lucky and got everything I needed.

Having said that, I do recommend a complete donor just for a convenient parts source.

The problem with piecing everything together is that you'll nickle and dime yourself to death on each and every little thing you didn't know you needed the last time you were at the salvage yard. And, not all 3.4s are the same; Toyota changed a few sensors throughout the years that are not compatible with the "other" version of that sensor.

Good luck!

I just skimmed through your thread.

I just have a couple thoughts to share. I have done 4 swaps now, some with the donor others without. Having the donor is super super nice but not necessary. I would probably jump on that one for 450 with the matching harness. You can always find an manual ECU and repin the auto harness to work.

Obviously some deals are better than average but I would say my average amount I have spent on a motor has been around 900. Like I said different places and different deals will change that number but the way I see it is you spend acouple hundred getting an ecu and a few things you are still good.

Anyways like I said maybe I should read the whole thread before posting but I am not that interested really, just thought I would post my experience with donors and piecing together a motor. Let me know if you have any questions, I rarely get on anymore but when I do I would be more than happy to answer any questions I can.

GOOD LUCK.
