worst feeling ever
after laboring over this truck for what feels like forever, pints of blood lost on bloodied knuckles and various cuts, and countless cussing, and using the lords name in vain, i start my truck up. wee! but then, i see something orange coming out of the hood, and it sure as hell isnt my newly painted block. No, no. Its my fuel filter shooting flames. :wtf:
haha...i dont think theres enough smileys in the world that could express what i felt. Oh no. And now, im scared ˟˟˟˟˟less about doing anything to it, but hey, push it into the yard, and see what I can do. man this sucks.

 Had a leak in the system huh? From the sounds of it you were able to put it out in time right? Always remember to replace the crush washers at every union if they're disconnected, they're a one time use type part. There's also a connector somewhere near the diagnostic connector that you can jump to energize the fuel pump without starting the engine for the purpose of checking for leaks. Briefly turning the key to he run position should also pressurize the system but the pump will not continue to run as it will with the test jumper.

Man,
that sucks big time. I've been following your posts about building your engine. You are right, that's gotta be the worse feeling ever...Especially since you think that you're finally done and are starting it up...I feel for you man.
Sorry,
Salue

well, turns out the fuel filter (the side going to the fuel rail) inlet was the culprit...it was bent coming out of the box, and the banjo fitting just weren't sealing right. well, i couldnt find the reciept so i ended up buyin a whole new filter, and relocated the fenderwell. Yay no more fires! Now, it just sounds like a John Deere tractor without my flowmaster hooked up....not having a welder sucks major. I just JB Welded it for the night so I can do some tuning first thing tomorrow before taking it to the muffler shop. Speaking of tuning, any suggestions why the damn thing is idling so irratic? Its loping really hard, and just cuts out. Im guessing the weird little contraption sitting on the top of the valve cover that has two vacuum hoses running to it, one from the pressure regulator, and the other to the uppper intake plenum is the culprit. the little black cylinder on the side of it snapped off, so im guessing a vacuum leak is doing it. BUT, i tried timing it while i had it running...the thing starts to die any further than 10* BDC.....so is there some advancing on the engine i need to know about?
-Metallica- yeah man...its a 24/7 party with me
-Shane- yeah, i put it out in time....im just lucky it didnt work through the filter, or jump over to the tank fuel line...big boom, know what im saying  ?
-Salue- So your one of those that read and dont reply
lol...jkjk yeah...i feel like i know that truck more intimately than my woman
seriously though...thanks for the sympathy. at least theres people in this world that can relate to my connection to my truck. luckily, most of them are on this forum!!

Glad to hear you saved it.
Vacuum leak possibly, plug that busted thing up with your finger or whatever and see if it makes any difference. Also could partially be air in the cooling system, if the ECU's sensor is not submerged 100% of the time it can mess with the idle, this will cause a loping high idle from ~1.5-2k dropping to low idle and jumping back up again every few seconds. Generally speaking a vacuum leak will just make it run like crap. Stock cam, and timing marks on chain properly lined up? I've also had a bad coil wire cause a loping idle, did a make/break connection thing as the engine in my old celica flexed in it's mounts.

where exactly is the ECU? is that the sensor in the thermostate outlet tube. Almost positive about the timing chain marks..the only thing im not too shure about is the bottom one...i set it, then my dumb@ss uncle touched the top sprocket and might have f'd it up..but im almost positive its still set right. Its actually this cam rioght here . Any idears?
