HI everyone, I'm new to this forum and had a few questions about my truck.... Today I went to Victorville (about an hour and a half away from my house) and everything was fine. I was on my way home and I was slowing down as I came to a stop sign. I went to downshift to 4th and then I let out the clutch 4th ground a little and I slammed the clutch to the floor. The gear ground cuz the transmission refused to downshift to fourth and soo on. I stopped at the stop sign and when it was my turn I went. I pushed the clutch in and attempetd to shift into second but again it refused to go! I know that my rear transmission oil seal is leaking but not horribly and that the clutch has 158,200+ on the stock 1987 clutch.... Can anyone help me with my problem I appreciate it. I'm 16 and that truck is my daily driver its a 1987 toyota pickup 4 cylinder 5 speed thanks

 

if your not lubed its gonna grind and be REALLY hard to engage into gear....your going to need a clutch defintly..thats a lot of miles for one....your syncros could also be a little out of whack...try double clutching and see how that works out

 

so you too agree that my clutch could be worn out! HAHA I think its mostly freeway miles can that change the affect of the wearing and how bad is it when the gears grind just a little

 

check the clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder for leakage. maybe get someone to push in the clutch while you look at the slave

 

I just changed the mast cylinder a few weeks ago because it was leaking but I never let it get to the point it sucked air in I change the master cylinder and bled it. The slave cylinder doesn't seem to be leaking and the transmission oil was full iut just seems to be gettin harder to shift could it possibly be my clutch? with 158000 freeway miles on it?

 

Do a search on replacing the nylon/plastic bushing parts were the shifter enters (from inside the vehicle) the transmission. Lots of people talk about this-it is worth a shot.

 

I had a hard time shifting into 1st and reverse, and this is what I did to resolve the problem:

1. changed the transmission oil
2. checked my pedal assembly for any cracks that may have caused the push rod in the MC not to work properly
3. checked my SC to make sure that it was extending properly while the clutch pedal was depressed.
4. changed out my disintegrated clutch shifter bushing
5. changed both my MC and SC after having discovered a leak coming out of the MC push rod and pressure bled the system to ensure no air bubbles remained

note: if you have any air bubbles, this could lead to premature wear in your MC and SC

It was also interesting to note that all of the above helped a little, and finally changing out the MC and SC was the answer for my problem.
