Question about repacking wheel bearings.
I tried doing a search for this information unsuccessfully. I replaced the front rotors and brake pads on my 95 4runner 2 WD. I repacked the wheel bearings, but got stuck when tightening everything back down. The Chiltons says for the large adjusting nut (54 mm?) to use some special tool to measure the drag (not a torque wrench). Anyone know an easy way to tighten these adjusters down without this special tool? Or should I do it by feel and then take it to the dealer and pay to have the wheel bearings repacked so they will tighten it correctly?

I just did it by feel and have had no probs since (knock on wood) I never took it into the dealer or any other place to do that.

Thanks for the advice. I tightened them hand tight, then about another 1/4 turn. I didn't feel any slop and any more I would hear a grinding when I spun them. Any suggestions on the right way to do them by feel?

I guess you could say "snug". I would tighten them down hard, then loosen them up a fair amount and make sure that you put the washer thing that bends over the bolt on. That's very important.

torque to 43ft/lbs
spin left and right a few times
loosen and re-torque to 18ft/lbs
spin to feel the preload, should be no slop and no grinding
add lock washer and second nut, torque to 35ft/lbs
check preload again, and if all seems good bend the tabs of the lock washer to hold the nuts
If you don't have or can't find a 54mm socket, 2 1/8" will also work.
To check the preload properly, try to spin it by pulling on a wheel stud with a fish scale. ~12 lbs is spec.
