Leak found near rear driver side wheel
#21
I replaced the brake shoes and inner seal (twice) and it still leaks. So, I probably need to replace the bearings and outer seal.
The dealer is asking about $406 per side (bearing, inner and outer seals replaced as well as brake shoe replacement).
At that price, I may want to give another shot at replacing it myself.

Have you replaced the outer seal?
Don't you need some sort of adapter to press the seal out?
It seems the bulk of the labor is involved with the outer seal and wheel bearing replacement.
Another question, if Toyota ever performed a recall for the rear axle seals, would I get reimbursed if I took it to the dealer?
Also, what does the new seals and bearing do to rectify the problem? It seems that you are replacing the components, yet the failure mechanism still exists.
So, if I replace all the seals, am I good for another 60k miles?

not really. just the beaing separater thing and a press, but you could just bang the splined end on the ground while holding the brake backing plate and it should work off. just be careful not to maul the splines. I don't like that method. For pressing the bearing and retaiiners and abs rotor back on I used $10 worth of crap I pieced together at Homodepot and my press. I could send you some pics of my SST's (haha) if you need them.
>It seems the bulk of the labor is involved with the outer seal and wheel bearing replacement.
true, but you just need a press and a bearing separater. the seal shoves up into the bearing flange so once you press the bearing off the axle you just pull (by hand) the seal out and then pound the bearing out of the flange.
>Another question, if Toyota ever performed a recall for the rear axle seals, would I get reimbursed if I took it to the dealer?
beats me.
>Also, what does the new seals and bearing do to rectify the problem? It seems that you are replacing the components, yet the failure mechanism still exists.
It doesn't still exist for me because I didn't just replace the seals and bearing. I replaced the axle and everything on it. that way I bought all the parts and assembled them, then pulled the old axle and dropped the new assembly in. 4runner was only out of commision for about an hour.
>So, if I replace all the seals, am I good for another 60k miles?
In my opinion it depends, check the runout on the axle before you pull it and compare with the tolerance that is listed in the toyota fact. service manual, can't remember what it is. if it is bent, then it will happen again. some people never have the prob again, but I had it six times before I replaced everything and now that everything has been replaced, I haven't found a leak since, I think it's been about 15k or so and no leaks. it used to only go about 1k miles and then start leaking again.
good luck.

How much did it run you if don't mind me asking?
New axle, new backing plate, brakes, brake drum, seals, bearings, abs rotor...
Did you replace both sides or just one side?
J
btw, I can figure something out to use for the press.
I might take it to the dealer since I don't have time this month.

When I get home tonight I'll grab the receipt and scan it at work tomorrow or just type the prices in.
>Did you replace both sides or just one side?
No, just the drivers side, the passenger side has never leaked so I didn't want to ˟˟˟˟˟ with it.

A note about this, I was going to do this too but when I called them to see about how much they might charge, they told me they would do all the work or non of it. They won't just assemble the axle for me. That ticked me off! Then I told them everything I wanted replaced, which was the whole axle assembly and all parts, and they quoted me $1200+ and that was using the old brake backing plate ($60-$80 wholesale).
I replaced everything including the backing plate even thought I probably could have reused it, I want it new. the wheel cylinder I didn't replace that.
I'll get those prices for you. Part numbers too?

I really don't expect details, just a good estimate.
Part numbers will be nice.

I will get the part numbers tonight. I meant to get the receipt and bring it to work today but I forgot, darn xbox makes me forget everything once I'm home from work.

With house shopping, work, and classes, I didn't have time to work on the Runner. So it's in the dealer for both sides to be fully replaced. I got a quote of about $894 that covers labor, outer/inner seals, bearings, reluctor, retention clips, abs rotor, and brake shoes. 1 year, unlimited miles warranty.
Funny how the guy at the service center at the dealership said it wasn't common and he only fixed 8 runners last year.
I bring mine in and I'm talking to a few service folks that tell me about their recent axle seal fix. Most of them are driver side axle seal leaks.
Anyhow, my friend's shop is willing to compete with the pricing, but I'm not sure if he wants to warranty the work.
