I cleaned my throttle body today.....

I was having my idle drop down to just under 500 rpms today. So I decided to clean the throttle body.

Here's a write-up http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/mainte...throttle_body/.

My toothbrush was completely black many times after I pulled it out of the throttlebody. There's no telling how long ago it was last done.

I haven't had any problems after doing it yet.

I would suggest this to anyone who has not done it yet. It obviously made a difference. Its very easy to do and will make your vehicle run better.

Good Luck

Did you have to adjust your idle since the cleaning? I had to adjust mine a little after cleaning it.

Ya, I adjusted it a little higher just in case I would have the same problem again. I brought the idle back down, but haven't driven it when it was cold to see if there are anymore problems.

I'm hoping no more problems.

My idle jumped over 300 RPM's after cleaning mine. Truck idles much smoother and just seems to run better. Hopefully I'll see a small increase in gas mileage.

my engine idle was running very low... took it to the dealer and they suggested cleaning the throttle body... it did the trick and the idle went up... im thinking now, though... that it went up too much...

what is the spec. (rpm) for idle in park and spec for idle in drive?

mine is running 700-800 in drive, 800-900 in park/neutral

next question would be.... if this is high.... how do you lower it?

thanks much for the info.

Jay-q that sounds fine. if you have a 3.0 there is a little screw on the TB that you can turn to adjust it click here here to see it. its the screw on the left hand side of the pic.

You _may_ have to adjust the idle speed after cleaning if the TB is really dirty. You won't know until you do it. But, it's easy to adjust the idle speed if need be.

Peace!

Ok, I'm kinda confused....

You are just cleaning the throttle body by hosing it down with carb cleaner and then attacking everything you can reach with a tooth brush? So you can spray carb cleaner down into the TB, past the butterfly valve without any damage?

Thanks,
Steve

I too would like to know the specs on this.

When I replaced the cata converter, the muffler and put on 2.25 tailpipe, I noticed it idled much higher than normal. I think mine is roughly around 1000 rpm when I start it, and as it warms up it comes down to around 600.

Then the other week I cleaned the throttle body out. Holy shnikes, that think was dirty as all hell. Sparkling clean now

It still idles very high, and I was gonna have the shop adjust it for me, but if its that easy, I might as well do it

Yeah, adjusting the idle is very easy. You would be throwing away money if you paid the shop to do it. Can you adjust the idle on a 3.4L? For some reason I didn't think you could.

As for spraying down the TB, I just spray the toothbrush and then scrub the TB. When the toothbrush gets dirty I just spray it down again until it is clean. I try not to let the TB cleaner run back past the butterfly. If it does I just open the butterfly and push a rag up in there to soak it all up.

I hope that was some help.

I have a 3.0L, 3VZE or whatever type of engine. Wasn't sure if you were responding to me with the 3.4L question. I will have to do some research and check into this... need to find out the specs of where it should be idling at.

Thanks

Question

Is there any reason not to just completely remove the throttle body and spray it out from both sides other than having to replace the gasket? Also where can I find the idle adjust on the 3.4L engine, if there is such a thing?

I let mine idle at 750 give or take 50. I just cleaned my throttle body out yesterday using throttle body cleaner. It was very dirty. Haven't paid attention to the idle yet. Will check it tomorrow though. Do not use Carb cleaner for this. The bottle says to not use on fuel injected engines.
