how to check timing?

hey all- i feel sort of dumb asking this with being a car guy myself but i have never actually checked timing on any vehicles myself. can someone give me a heads up on how to do it with my 85 22r? im getting really bad mileage and i want to make sure the timing is correct because in the year ive had it, i havent checked it. is there a way to check the timing without a light? i know i can technically rotate the distributor a tiny bit to adjust it but i want to get a little input before i start jacking around. thanks!

to do it accurately, get a light, the 22r should be timed when at operating temp and at 900 rpm, take off both hoses that go to the distributor and plug them, set the timing to 5 degrees before TDC and your good to go
