due for tune-up

due for tune-up
My rig is due for a tune up, I'm at around 55k miles. I want spark plugs and wires changed, timing belt, fuel filter, etc... I'm not very knowledgeable about it all, and I want to take it in to have the pros do it. I do NOT want to take it to the local Toyota dealer, they follow the stereotype of a stealership and they do not deserve any more of my business.
So what types of places to you folks take your rigs to for basic tuneups? A co-worker recommended a place local to me called Eagle Tire, she got her 2nd gen tuned for I think around $200. Anyone have any suggestions or price ranges that I should be looking for? Oh yeah, my truck is a 2001 tacoma 4x4 Sr5 manual trans 2.7L.

DIY
I was the same way
Save some money get a Hanes manual $15.00 DIY, I'd prob let the dealer do the Timing belt but other than that all the other stuff super simple with basic hand tools..

The timing belt is not due on that truck for a while . 70.000 is about right for that and my dealer said that's the earlist he would replace it. But if you just want to get it done now that's fine to. Replacing a timing belt every 50.000 miles is more money than i want to spend. Mike

Since you have the 4 banger, you have a timing chain, not a belt. I wouldn't worry about it for a long time. As said before, the plugs and wires are an easy DIY job. The fuel filter is a pain. Do a search, I remember reading a good DIY post with pics before i replaced mine. Good luck.

Chain and no belt
SLOYOTA is right, you have a chain and not a belt. I didn't see that on your original post. It should be a long time before you worry about that. Mike:pat:

woops! Like I said, I'm not really knowledgeable about all the engine maintenance. I have thought of doing the plugs and wires myself, and I've done it before on older vehicles. But at a glance it looked like a pain with my newer engine. I saw a fuel filter writup, too, that said using socket-wrench extensions makes work easy. Maybe I'll give it a shot myself, it's always nice to get your hands dirty. I have never found a Hayne's for 2001 and up Tacomas. Will the engine info be the correct on 2000 and older manuals?
