All,

I drive 96 sr5 4runner.
In winter I feel cold air coming from the outside blowing into
the passenger side. It comes from the area of the glove box and
from below the dash board.
It stops, if I switch air intake regulator to off/inside circulation.
So my guess is there's a problem in the air intake for the heating/
cooling system. I have no idea how is it build, so any advise
would be appreicated as for where to start looking.

I noticed some thread about dead mice in the air intake ;-)))
so I assume some members here should have a pretty good idea
how to get inside.

Can you still feel the cold air if you don't have the heater on? Or does it only happen with the heater on?

it doesn't matter whether the heater is on or off.
The cold air blows in when I drive, it's kind of forced in.
When I switch air circulation to "inside"it shuts off the cold blow,
so I deduce it closes some outside air intake and my problem
is in between that 'closure' and outside air intake for the heater.

 

I've got the same issue with my '97. And yup, turning it from fresh air to recirculating is about all that does the trick.

Let me know if you find a good fix for it, I'm all ears.

Hboss, and I bet your cold air is colder than mine :eek:
living in Edmonton, brrrh. I lived in Calgary and have been
to Emdonton ;-)

I think the first step is checking the Air Intake door adjustment.
This door should close fully in both directions. The adjustment is made by repositioning the cable sheath in the metal retaining clip in the blower housing. (pic)



The picture doesnt show the cable. Just disconnect it and move the lever back and forth and youll feel the door close in each position. Then connect the cable to the lever. Put the sheath of the cable near the retaining clip, but dont fasten it. move the Fresh/Recirculate door lever and find out where the cable needs to be. Secure it in place.

See if that solves it.

Jay, you da man. I don't have time to take the center console off & have a look right now but I'll post my follow-up findings when I do for sure. Thx dude.

 

Its the glove box your gonna wanna remove, not the center console. With the glove box removed, you will see the item in the picture inside and to the right.

That simple, huh? In that case maybe I'll have me a look-see sooner than later.
