22re don't want to's

Ok the time has come to swap the head.... before i bought my 4runner the idots that installed the rebuilt engine over torqued everything including the exhaust manafold studs (my big problem) i have used helicoil, didn't work used 12mm studs, they striped too (i actualy think this head has a defective in the metal)
so now i have decided to change the head.... I have a head but i still worry about my abilities to do this.
I think my concerns are the initial timing, and torqing everything to the correct spec. has anyone with low(not NO) mech skills accomplished this? what are some of the key things to worry about? I will be picking up a high quality torque wrench soon and i will be going with steel chain guides.
any recomedations on additional things to do with it torn down?
(at my skill level)
i have the chiltons.
