Also I have done some research on running bio-fuels. I will be running bio-diesel in the VW engine but not veg-oil or other non-refined fuels, the injection system was not designed to handle such a high viscosity fuels and it will cause severe engine damage.

As a soap maker, I was pretty surprised by how easy brewing bio diesel really is.
Its not "brewing" per say. More just washing. Strip the various fatty acids of their glycerine using a heavy solvent... aka Potassium Hydroxide or Sodium Hydroxide aka cuastic postash and Lye. Drain the glycerine and solvent slurry (about 20% of your total oil volume pre solvent)...add ethanol or methanol.... wash with water....dry... done. The tough part is volume, and getting rid of your by products. The more volume you do, the more "flammable" material you gotta store, and the more glycerin you have leftover! I hear you can compost the glycerin, and you can also make a hell of a lot of soap. Liquid soap if you use K, bar soap if you use Na...

Success, I have completed my first diesel engine rebuild and it sounds like it's running great so far. I completed the initial engine heating and fourth stage of angle torquing the head bolts and it looks to have gone great.
Now it's time to tackle my first ring and pinion install. Stripped it down tonight and have the third member sitting on the bench waiting for the morning. Hopefully the pictures will get posted soon, have had a lot on my plate lately.

So attempted ring and pinion but ran out of time, must get some studying done, so I have send my 3rd member off to a freind of a freind that knows Toyota's like the back of his hand. I managed to get the pinion depth pretty close but without a puller and a press, it would take a lot of trips to the local machine shop to get it dialed in.

As far as price your main cost will be the engine, I spent close to 3,000 on my engine so far, about six hundred for the adaptor kit and an other four hundred for pluming, gauges, wires, exhaust tubing etc. And I have just spent about four hundred and fifty dollars to re-gear my rear end, still need to do the front end, but I just want to be able to drive this thing around. The newer 1.9 engines are not cheap, your best bet is to find a wrecked vw with the engine you want, especially if you want to control the engine with a computer, if you don't it would make more sense to find one of the AAZ engines that are already mechanically controlled, you can turn up the max fuel screw and tweak the boost a bit and get a little more out of those with very little effort.

Gears are in, engine is running great, but dinky radiator fan I got won't cut it. I went cruising down town Austin to look at the hot rods that are in town for the weekend and kept trying my vw engine kept trying to boil over. I'm going with one of these,http://www.flex-a-lite.com/auto/html/toyota-4x4.html. Once I get that on, I will put the a/c pump on. Then new 3" custom bent exhaust, and some new injectors. Then I think I will leave it alone for a while.

It is highway drivable, not a lot of passing power, but it you where you want to go if your not in a hurry.
I'm thinking a good combination for some more power might be an 11mm pump, .205 injectors and a methanol/water injection system. This will keep everything cool and give it some kick and not break the bank.
Pipe dreams for now though as I'm starting to run low on funds for this thing.

If you have the VW ecu try

Rocketchip Stage 2 or higher

Bosio PP520 Injectors

a VNT 22 turbo

if you need more ideas try MALONE TUNING

So this thing is just not cutting it, and I don't have any more cash to trow at it. I put the bigger injectors back in and it just doesn't have enough power. It keeps over heating even with new water pump and the electric fan kit because I have to put work the engine so hard to get it to go up these hills around here. I have just started an e-bay auction starting at $2000 dollars on E-bay if anyone is interested in bidding on this engine, here is a link to the auction, http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...m=120708677013.

I think I am just going to put one of the newer 2.7L 4cylinder in place of the old 3.0vze.
It was a fun project, but just not enough power, I think a 4bt would be a lot better suited to push my bigger tires around, but I will save that for my next 4x4 project.

Everyone around here keeps suggesting I do this swap (they all know I have been talking about a diesel swap for years). But I didnt think a 1.9 would be enough power... guess I was right!

I have been thinking more along the line of a 4cyl diesel from a mitsubishi fuso box truck.. It is turbo, and intercooled, and I think would have ample power for a runner...
Anyone done this swap before? Thoughts?

It just so happens that I already have the motor/trans from a rig that I wrecked a year ago... so that part is easy... Just gotta start measuring, and planning I guess.

Sounds like a good idea especially if you already have the engine/tranny...

The people that have suceeded with this swap used the computer engine control, this is the key to this swap, and it might not be best suited for a truck with big heavy 33" tires.

I don't think it was the motor so much as the lack of the VW ECU

My Jetta TDI 1.9 has 150 hp and 252 torque and 49.9 mpg running it like I stole it and it is still a very reliable daily driver still but IT HAS A E.C.U. UPGRADE. I believe that the problem was no VW E.C.U. with this build , I really think had he used the VW ecu and went to a ROCKET CHIP 2/3/4 even 5 upgrade we would have been hearing about how AWESOME this swap was.

I just check out his ebay post seems he blew the motor so I guess we will never know how that one would have been if it had the ECU done .
