new engine wont fire

I just got done swaping a new 22re into my 92 pick up. everything is hooked up engine cranks. it fired for a second when we sprayed ether in the intake. we thought it might be a timing problem so we redid the distributor.

we now have no idea where the timing is and no idea why it wasnt firing in the first place. what do we do after we take the valve cover and find TDC and redo the distributor?

If it fires on ether, you have a fuel problem.
