'90 4Runner swap decision help?
#1
First off, this is my first post, I believe this is the right place for this?
I am not mechanical inclined but have a buddy who is, along w/ neccesary resources (tools, equip. etc)
I have done LOTS of reading on here about the different swaps possible and am wondering what the right swap is for me.
My situation:
Stock 1990 4Runner that sat for 2yrs before i purchased for $2200
Auto Trans.
94,xxx miles
Have gone through 2 diff motors in last 16k miles
1st- Head gasket
2nd- Head gasket
2nd- Also Distributor went out, (I was told), metal shards got into the oil?
Fear the tranny is going out soon (slips mildly every 2k miles or so)
That being said, I have no faith in the 3.0L and do not want to spend any more money on it.
This is my daily driver.
I am attached to my first vehicle and hope parting with it is a last resort.
I was wondering if the 3.4L is the right choice.
I plan on also going to a M/T, but read that the 3.4L is a costly conversion.
I want something that can tow a boat that weighs just short of 1,500lbs without too much struggle.
What are your guys' opinion on what I should do?
I know every situation is different, just tired of throwing money into the abyss.
Thanks for any input

I love my 3.4 swap. It can be expensive but if you are patient and find the right deal it isn't that bad. I actually made money on my swap by buying a nice Runner that had front end damage and selling off everything I didnt need.
