4.0L into 3rd Gen 4runner
So I have been saving up for awhile and think I am ready to swap out my 3.4L with 229,000miles with a 2006 Tacoma 4.0L with 5,000 miles on it. Has ANYONE ever done this swap? I have already found the engine/trans/transfer case. I'm looking to have this done by the end of august. So hopefully someone willl have some info on this.

I would love to know if you have gotten anywhere on this. I have always thought putting the 4.0L into my 88 would be fun, but its mostly just a dream. How much did you get the whole setup for if you dont mind me asking? I assume the new 4.0L are in the same reliability category as previous toyota engines.

Heard about this coming up in the past.. that engine is really long compared to the 3.4. I can't even imagine the wiring considering it has no throttle linkage. You would have to use the tranny that came with it too since it wont' bolt up.. that's going to be a whole another nightmare to make work.. crossmembers, wiring, linkages, ect. Not saying it can't be done because anything is possible with enough resources but for someone in their garage this would be a highly complex swap.
I'd love to see it done. My 06 Taco had 285's on it with a 3" lift. I had a Volant intake, Borla Cat, and a PSC1 Signal Calibrator from URD. I had it professionally dyno tuned. It dynoed at 226RWHP. The tech estimated it was making about 265 at the crank. It was the 6speed and it would run with my 271HP Tundra no problem. It was a blast to drive. It would pull SO hard in 2nd gear it was ridiculous. I pulled my 4-Runner on a 16ft trailer almost 2000 miles with it. The load weighed 6400lbs. Hated to see it go but with a baby on the way the Access Cab just was not going to cut it.
