350 swap ?

i just bought a 82 toyota pickup 4x4 for $100 it has a good trans and good axles a brand new altenater starter and weber carb the only problem with the truck is it spun a rod it will cost me around $300 to rebuild it but i have a fresh 350 in the shop and was wondering what it will cost to swap it for the 22r i know i need the motor mounts and adaptor to atach the motor and trans but what else will i need i can custom mount a bigger ratiator and things like that i fornd a adaptor plate for the 350 and the 4 speed and it was like $450 if it is going to cost that much to do the swap i am going to rebuild the 22r
and how will things hold up to the 350 if i do not drive it too hard and what am i looking at money wise

thanks

The Chev 350 is a good swap for this car, the only real draw back for my liking is the starter motor is on the same side as the rod on top of your front diff, this means you will have to get an offset starter to avoid having it broken off when that side of your vehicle hits a bump. the diffs are fairly strong and will take quite a lot of beating before they break, your gearbox however is not so good. If you can get a gearbox out of a V6 Hilux/4 runner. as they are a much stronger box, and you also will need to change your radiator, the 4 cylinder one won't cope. If you are looking for a cheap way out then you would be better rebuilding the engine in it. The v8 mod is by no means cheap and to top it all off, how much of the work will you be doing? working on things yourself can save you $1000.00's of dollars, the more you have done, the more it will cost you, doing that V8 conversion will set you back $4000.00 or more.depending on what problems show up during the rebuild.

I'll fix the 22r, will be nice to have a running toy for less than $500.

Ah, no motor, the truck is crap. You'd better let me come haul it off for you.

If you want a SB for cheaper, you'd probably be better off using 700R4, TH350, etc., and NP203 or 205. Make some mounts and get some driveshafts made.

go to northwestoffroad.com or advancedadapters.com it is gonna cost about 1500-2000 to do the swap but its worth at i use stock axles and tranfer and drive shafts i have a turbo 350 trans but honestly i would go with a 700r for the over drive because im cruzin at about 60 at 3500 rpms for the starter you will need some heat shield because it sits so close to the exhaust and gets to hot so it burns up the windings in the starter and for a radiator you will want at least a 3 core but 4 would be best i had mine custom made cost around 600 and i use an electric fan other than that the conversion is fairly easy and worth it

A mini stater will get the starter up and away from the exhaust. $80 on ebay.

I use a single core aluminum $100 83 camaro radiator and a $25 ford taurus electric fan. Cools like a dream.

I think if you are going to run an auto in a 4wd, then don't waste time with the cooling system from the radiator. The motor should get a good workout in the bush, and that in turn will also overheat the transmission, you would be much better off getting a separate transmission cooler and run with that. Even if your motor overheats a bit your transmission will still be at operating temp. Don't even go near the radiator's cooling, the transmission can in some instances cause your engine to overheat because it is adding heat to your radiator as well. That is my 2 cents worth anyway.
