oil pan swap question

Swapping my 3.4s mid sump pan for the rear sump version and I've come across a snag. There's a plate between the pan and bottom of the blok that's flat with some holes cut in it, but the new rear sumps mounting brackets don't line up with the holes in the plate. Can I run the setup w/o this plate? Or is it vital to smooth operation? If I need it, can I drill holes in it to mount the sump? Or is this something special that I have to buy the right version from the factory?

Sorry no pics for now
