Hi everybody. My name is John and I live in vt. I just traded a car I had for a 87 4runner with a sas conversion and my queastion is this....... Does this set up look alright or not for the steering? When I was driveing it home I literaly had a death grip on the wheel because there was sooooooo much play in it, it was very hard to keep it on the road for the 48mi that I drove it. Its like the steering wheel would turn between a 1/4 turn and 1/2 turn back and forth just to keep it somewhat going straight. Anybody have an idea on where to start to look for this problem? I do beleive it is the original ifs steering box, but maybe no good, dont know? Please, ANY help on this would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, John
Well I just tried to upload a pic of the front end but for some reason it wont let me. But if someone has any idea on what im talking about, feel free to jump in or post a pick of what a high lift and a cross over steering pic should look like and maybe I can go from there.

Hope this works. Here is the link to the pics of the front end and pics of the runner. Looks like crap because the guy sprayed it with bedliner then clear coated it and now the clear coat is ALL starting to flake off, but enjoy.

That was the other thing, there is no tie rods, they are heim joints so maybe thats the problem?

That is some booty fab steering for sure. You should look into high crossover steering.

I really didnt think it looked right. Does anyone know who makes a half way decent one for a reasonable price? This will be my daily driver as well but dont have much money at this time but really need to get it on the road because this is all I have for a vehicle.

 

That look pretty wild, do you have any more pictures? Of the steering knuckles, and just the whole setup?

Thats what im trying to get help on, I know its a mess, but im looking for help on makeing it better, and DRIVE and handle better. WHAT DO I NEED, and please dont be a smart ass, im looking for serious help, besides me, lol

 

Start by redoing the front end and use: http://www.wabfab.org/SAS-Kits/SAS-Kit/flypage.tpl.html It has everything you will need. If it were me i would properly redo the rear w/ out those blocks and crazy long shackles. You can use a kits from Wabfab or look into the chevy 63 springs depending on the lift you want. just my .02 good luck

 

What kind of skills do you have as far as welding and mechanical?
Personally I would park it for now. Front end basically needs to be redone.
Just putting hi steer on it will not help that much.

Rear is a mess too
Springs have negative arch, hence why the mastermind double stacked blocks.
I would fix the front and than work on the rear.
