I think Pismo would be fun because, well its fun(clam chowder)!
Wide open spaces(clam chowder) to meet n' camp(clam chowder). Trails nearby(clam chowder), touristy stuff right next door(clam chowder), great ocean view of course (clam chowder)and the dunes(clam chowder)!
Besides, we can't have Milton worried about a long road trip toasting his 4R!
I hear Death Valley and Joshua Tree are good. Never been tho.

I haven't been to any of these but death valley, so I won't vote... Personally, all but arizona and moab can be reached in one day of relatively easy driving for me, so I'd prefer those, but arizona sounds like a good call as well.
death valley can be *very* difficult to secure lodging at this late date, especially for any large group of people, unless you are willing to go primitive (which I am). otoh, it's a gorgeous place...
ah heck... it's all between 400 - 900 miles. whichever!

come on over to AZ- we've got it all.
Half to Full day runs:
The 35 mile Lake Pleasant to Crown King trail is suitable for mildly built IFS rigs w/ the E-Locker, and offers several optional routes for stuff in the 3 rating range with only one non-bypassable obsitcal- the Ledge at the Oro Belle Mine. Crown King has eats and adult beverages at the end of the trail, and a good road out to I-17 back to Phx. It usually takes about 4 to 5 hours to get to Crown King. This trail is suitable for larger groups.
The 12.5 mile DeSoto Mine Trail requires mild lift, a locker and sliders- it takes 3 to 4 hours to complete in good conditions. IFS rigs WILL have fun! It is approx a 1-1/4 drive north of Phx.
Sedona has several scenic trails in the Red Rock Country- all doable in a stock rig. It is approx 2+ hours north of Phx. A local favorite is Broken Arrow.
For pure rock crawlin' trail runs, the Table Mesa area is home to the best of the best- with everything from Lower Raw Deal at the low end of the 3 rated trails, to the Matrix- perhaps the hardest rock crawling trail in the western U.S.
I've seen IFS rigs go thru Lower Raw Deal (3 rated), Upper Terminator (3+ rated), and Predator (body damage very likely, 4+ rated), and for the SAS'd rigs, Upper Raw Deal, Lower Terminator, and Judgement Day are a LOT of fun. If your feelin' froggy, Annihilator, Twisted, or Armagedeon will put you in an elite class of hard core warriors.
The Florence Jnt. area east of Phx. has the famous Martinez Cabin/Canyon trail- I rate it a 3, and lots of easier runs available like th Coke Ovens, as well as trails in the 4 to 5 range, like High Way to Hell. I'm not as familiar with those trails, it's a 4 hour drive for me to get even close to a trailhead.

I doubt I could make that particular weekend, we already have something on the calendar then. Plus if we don't have a 2nd car yet, I won't be driving anyway. OTOH, I'd be very tempted to fly somewhere and ride along!

James... you need some chowder!! I have made it to Hungry Valley (with no problems at all, just more gas stops), I believe my 4Runner can make it anywhere now!!
Thats why I voted for Anza Borrego... it seems to be the next place to visit!

some of the other places would be great, and I do want to plan a trip to Moab, and I am going to CO later this year.
But for that weekend I say Superstitions/Anza Borrego or I will go to the Jambo at JV with the hardcore guys from PBB and watch them thrash their rigs and drink beer.

Oh yeah, Anza Borrego. No funds for anything further

i voted for san diego. SD is my first choice, but i'd be down for some other places. pismo will happen again this summer, so i'll be patient for that. doesn't sound like there's too much at joshua tree, and moab is kinda far. i've been there once and would love to go again, just kinda far for the jambo this year i think.
