Watching DVDs a lot, my eyes have become pretty picky about video quality. However, when watching off-roading footage, I don't find myself distracted too much by low quality. I think it's because I'm intently focused on what's happening on the screen.

Specifically to your question: I would say the quality is comperable to a VHS tape. Not pristine VHS, but average SP quality. I'd be satisied with it in the interest of getting this out in a timely fashion. However, the rewind thing, to me, is a showstopper.

The source tape is Hi8, which is superior to VHS, but isn't DVD resolution. So nothing I come up with will overcome that.

Could it be overcome reasonably without killing costs?
Yes I think so. My theory is that the rewind problem and the lower quality, high capacity format are not completely unrelated. My guess is that, in the end, we're going to end up with two 1.5 hour, better quality DVDs. Whatever I do, cost is not going to excede $20.

Thanks for sticking with this.

I think that $20 a pop is reasonable, but for 2 DVD's, I would be down for more money if that meant higher quality and rewindability.

I appreciate that. But this is just a home video that happened to came out pretty good. A lot of people have an interest in seeing it, and I'd like everyone to have it who wants it. In my mind, keeping the cost reasonable is important in keeping with that spirit.

Thanks for the update!

I'm willing to pay more if it has to be put on 2 dvd's.

Test, one two, one two.

Any new word on this? I am eagerly awaiting popping the DVD in and camping out on the couch for a couple hours.

The project is going well, but it likely won't be unveiled for a couple more weeks. That's all I can say at this point. Well, I can also say that I think it's going to be a package everyone will be really pleased with. But I don't want to give too much away, or give you every detail (as I had been) and make you suffer through the setbacks along with me. Just be assured that this is going full steam ahead and (I think) will turn out great.

I'm still here and I still want one. $20 sounds good to me.

Thanks for all the effort Mike!

After tonight I will have regular access to the 'net again and i'll be back to posting 10-20 times a day. I've kinda been on sabbatical for a month.

Hi Mike,

I have read every post on this topic up to now and am impressed with you efforts! I also REALLY appreciate them! I'd love to get in on one of these. The only problems I have right now is cashflow and the lack of a dvd player. (Yeah, don't laugh everyone... I don't own a dvd player....) If the price between VHS and DVD is the same, I'll probably go with the DVD and just wait until I can by a player. (Or go to a friends house who has one!)

Whatever I do, I want to say thanks for getting this together!

-Scott

Sie verbiegen Ihren Rahmen wie ein kleines Mädchen. Ich möchte den König aufpassen, alle kleinen Mädchenunterseiten zu treten.

Ew, Steve, what would you like to do to a small girl?
