Southern Ontario - July
Just gauging interest in a easy run to Whitefish lake. Great campsite (rustic!) and a fantastic beach. Any bone-stock runner can make it on a good day and anyone interested can make a day out of the harder trails and rocks in there.
This would be a great way for the Southern Ontario members to meet up. I'm leaning towards the second weekend in July and planning to take my 8 yr old son during the last full week in July any way. And his Mom, if she's brave enough
Post here or PM if you're interested. GPS tags and directions available to those who require them.

Sounds good! The more the merrier. Runners, Jeeps, whatever. As long as we don't go on the long weekend, and as long as one of us gets to the really good campsites first, it's all good. I'm thinking I'm going to go in ahead, set up around the lake and then head back out to a meeting point to hook up with anyone who needs a lead in.
Anyone who wants to head in later will probably need the GPS tags to find it.
I'll keep you posted.

We'd be glad to have you and you'll find that the trail in is manageable in 2wd, provided the weather cooperates and it's not too slick. There are a few spots that can be tight, but I've gone in a number of times bone-stock and using only 2wd. It would be awesome if you came up from MI.
You're looking at about 6 hrs from Detroit and 1 1/2 hrs down the trail. Last time I went there was a guy fron Indy that was in the group...drove a 2005 Grand Cherokee and never scratched a fender.
This is a nice, easy, remote run that ends at a nice lake. For those that want, there is no shortage of forestry trails to bust out on, and plenty of rocks for them that wants 'em. I'll post some pics here of the toughest parts that I've seen, and you can judge from there.
This is going to be a "fun run" ...no carnage thanks. Bring the wife, bring the kids, bring your friends. Bring your libations or other diversions. All I ask is that you tread lightly, respect your fellow members and enjoy yourselves.

I am trying to find a map of a local city and where it is located at in Ontario with Michigan showing. It does sound like fun. Now you mentioned rocks? You mean rocks for trail carnage or rocks as in aka Geology? Sounds great! II am actually located closer to the Blue Water Bridge near Sarnia, not Windsor depending on where in Ontario this is?.
Could you post a city near by I can map it out for myself?
Thanks agian!

Rocks of all kinds...ones to wheel on, ones to look at and ones to put in the bank. This area is one of the most geologically diverse zones in the province of Ontario, with a wide range of minerals. Bancroft ,about 30 miles away, is well-known for it's annual Rock Hound festival.
Nearest city would be Peterborough, but if you go to google.com/maps look for Bon Echo Provincial Park. The area we are going to is on the western edge (outside) the park. I'll post some pics here later tonight. 44.9036 / 77.4035 or
44 54.09/77 24.12 will put you at the end of the trail .I have a better set of coordinates for the full run in.

I am interested, it just depends on when in July. I was suppose to go to Bancroft 5 years ago and never ended up making it in my college Geology class because of my sister's wedding and other things that came up.
I would be willing to go as long as time and dates are according to my scheduele. I might try emailing the geology prof at the college here as he has a Toyota 4x4 and he might be up for it?....

Tenative dates to consider (My son and I will be there on one of these dates I know)
July 7 -12 Second weekend in July - Follows a long-weekend.
July 17-20 My pick - Can anyone else go mid-week?
July 24 - 30 Last weekend in July - One week prior to a long-weekend
Only the really hard-core want to be here on a long weekend. The ATV guys like these trails, but they never camp out here. During the weekdays you need to look out for the logging trucks, who own the roads.
Here's a thought ...
I'm leaning towards the #2 pick - July 17 - 20 Monday to Thursday. Anyone who wants, could come up on the weekend before and maybe stick around and meet up on Monday, Or come early the following weekend on the thursday.
If most need a weekend date, my pick would be # 3 July 24 -30
While the trails are not "marked" those with gps will have no trouble finding the proper turns and will not need a lead in.
No GPS?...you'll have to plan on meeting in Gilmore, where everyone comming should stop for fuel anyway.

Ok, newbie mistake number 1: Never post a reply on the linking thread, nobody ever sees it.
Blair, I'm in. After looking at the dates, I don't know if I could swing the four day through the week, but I'd be in for any of the weekend romps.

The local Geolology Prof hit me back with an email stating he was going to be out West in July, so he is out. But I can pick up a book and start refreshing myself with some of rocks as I use to be able to identify some. Could bring it along and tyr to get some samples for the fun of it!

Cool. I'm bringing my rock hammer and goggles.
If you read anything from that bookmark I just posted, I'd like to hear an educated assessment of the viability and cosistency of the gold in the area.
It really is the stuff of legends. I have a story about the local gold that was related to someone from someone else who heard it all from this other guy. You know how gold stories go.
But at $850 / oz I'd love to trip on some of it that is still up there.
