Northern NM Wheeling 6/28 or 6/29?

Anyone interested or available for some wheeling this weekend?

I was thinking about something around Santa Fe, Los Alamos, or maybe Red River?

Lets get out there before they start closing things...

Give me a time and a place.

Either day would work for me with a mild preference for Sunday so I can stay in town for the rodeo.

I will check back here tomorrow for sure for more details.

I keep hearing the reports, sure hope I can get down there to meet some of you before the whole place is on fire!

If you were planning on a day trip only, I might be inclined to go to the Red River area.

If you would make it a camping trip, I would be willing to drive the extra distance to the SF area. I would prefer a 2 day thing, but if that doesn't work for folks on that end, I understand.

Do you have any links for trail reports and scenery one could expect in the specific areas you're thinking about? I'll try some searches as well.

If you put a time together, I'll see what I can work up. I'm free this weekend.

Darren-

I was planning just a day trip, but depending on where we end up, don't let that stop you from staying longer...

This link has a pretty good list of whats around NM. There is easy and hard stuff around Santa Fe, and a couple of easy but very scenic trails around Red River. I don't have any web links for the trails in town here. I purposely did NOT include the Jemez Mountains because there is a fire going up there right now and it could be difficult to get to the "good stuff"

I wouldn't necessarily let that stop me from staying longer as I have Mondays off too (work four 10's). It's just that I would need a tour guide so I would know where to go. But there's lots of information on the net, so I might be able to search for some stuff to see between now and then. Any other links are appreciated!

Sounds like we have 3?

There is a rodeo in town this weekend, so if it is a day trip, I would dig something not quite as long so I can roll in early and leave when we are done.

If not, camping is cool too.

Any other takers?

Well, it looks like the Alb. guys are busy, so its just the three of us, and probably a buddy of mine from Los Alamos (he drives a Sonoma ZR-2, but I don't hold it against him, too much). Lets gott Red River then. How about this trail Goose Lake . The hike to see Wheeler is supposed to be worth it...

Adrian, would you prefer Sunday? As far as a time, I am flexible. IIRC, Red River is just under two hours from either of us. Darren, you would have the longest drive, so lets decide on a time. As far as a place to meet, I haven't been to Red River in a long time. You guys will most likely be coming in from the east, so I would guess there is a gas station on that end of town where we could meet easily. Whaddaya say?

Sounds good Jayson. Pick a day, a time, and a place to meet and I'll be there. We can meet at the 1st gas station on one end of town or the other would be fine I suppose. It looks like there are only 4 in the town.

I might camp in our section of the Sangres and do a couple of trails to break up the drive, but either way, I love road trips.

I think Sunday would work better here as well if that works.

Sunday it is. I say we meet at the first gas station on the east end of town. My 4Runner is red, and so is Adrian's, I think. I may be with my friend's gold-colored GMC Sonoma ZR-2, so it should all work out...

I just you guys input on what time would work best. I'm thinking around 10:00 or 11:00 a.m.?

I should be able to make 10:00 to give you guys an earlier start if you want it.

I'm thinking I'll camp just west of Trinidad, which is a little north of Raton, on Saturday night. I'll pass through Raton on my way down, Adrian, so if you wanted, I could meet you there somewhere.

Great, so this is what we have going:

Sunday

First gas station on the east end of Red River
To go up to Goose Lake

Just need confirmation from Adrian.

You guys want to bring a lunch and chill for a bit up top?

Sunday, 10 a.m. at the first gas station on the east side of Red River.

I have a red 95 on 33's. If you see such a rig and no one is in it, look around for a big guy with a goatee who looks lost.

I will have lunch stuff packed and bring hiking boots to go to see the other peak. I won't claim to be in stellar condition, but if it is worth seeing, I will make it to the top.

I am not sure that I will be back here to check this in time, but I will be headed out of my place which is a little south of Raton around 8. If I knew I would be here tomorrow, I would caravan with you Darren, but I guess I will just see you in Red River.

Sounds like a plan gents, looking forward to it.

I am reconsidering this. How long do you think the trail will take us? It says 2 hours one way with lunch let's say 5 hours RT??? So I could potentially be home by 5pm??? Loosehead what do you think?

We had a great time. Nice trail, excellent scenery, and good company. It was nice to meet some other forum members and put faces with the names. If you ever have the chance to hit the trails with either Darren or Adrian, you should. These guys are great. Haven't had a chance to downlod the pics yet...Maybe tonight. We need to get all of you Alb. guys together when time allows.

Cheers,
