Nerf bars/running boards/ what not

What is recommended for a rocker panel protection (nerf bar or running boards or side step bars) where you want to get the maximum clearance height on a Limited 4Runner (99)?

I like some of the stuff at Overlander.com, but it looks like the step bars would hang a little low for my tastes (maybe on par with the stock running boards).

I saw some side bars that look close to what I want on the recent pictures from the WA get together (air nissan). A 2nd gen Runner had the bars right up against the rocker panel.

Hi J, to be honest with you, no nerf bar such as a Smittybilt, Westin, or Overland is going to offer any off road protection.
They are mainly for looks, and are made out of heavy exhaust tubing.
They can crush real easily.

That may have been my 2nd gen you are referring to if you mean the white one.
Those are rock sliderz, and they can not be ordered from any big stores.
They are mainly made by small shops, and are not really mass produced, but made to order.

Here are mine:
http://www.pnw4runners.net/tando/sliderz.htm

These are made to take an impact as they are made out of heavy duty material, and won't bend like the over the counter nerf bars will.
Most are welded on, and there are some bolt on ones available too.
Mine are of both designs as you will see from my page.

Also on YotaTech here we have an article I put together of various rock sliderz.
https://www.yotatech.com/~corey/arti...z_round_up.htm

In there you will find some links to various makers of them.
This type of bar is made to take a side impact, or to slide over rocks that would normally crush your side panels, or a regular store bought nerf bar.
These will offer far more protection than a store bought nerf bar ever can.

You might want to contact Mike (Xtreme Off-Road) on the forum here. He is also in the sliderz round-up.
He can get you bolt on sliderz that will fit your year of rig that are sold by both him and King's 4x4.
They are made by Maniac Metal Works.

Yeah, what Corey said.

I would also recommend Roger Browns sliders, they're one of the best designed sliders out there. I believe you can find him in the vendors section under 4crawler.
