Calling All Moab Experts...

I'm planning a trip to Maob in a few weeks...I've never been and would like some tips on what trails are good. I drive a '95 runner w/o lockers (yet), 31x10.50 BFG's, and KYB shocks. I want to know of some trails that I can have fun on but not get myself into too much trouble...Also its been raining like crazy in Utah the past month and I don't know what trail conditions are like as far as washouts and such...I would like any suggestions from those who have been...thanks!

I'd say Fins, elephant hill, if you have a winch, try metal masher w/out widowmaker or rock chucker. Elephant Hill can be done in a stock truck, w/ 28's.

My recomendation is to buy Charles A. Wells "A Guide to Moab's Backroads and 4-Wheel Drive Trails" It gives a great description of the trails, and great directions (some of the trails are a little hard to figure out).

Also, just as some advice. When dry, slickrock gives EXCELLENT traction, it's really amazing. You'll be able to climb/decend hills that are so steep. It's a real rush. If it's wet, don't go anywhere near these trails. It'll be like driving on ice.

Fins is great. I recomend you run it first, it's pretty easy, and will give you a great feel for how steep you can go.

As for Chickene's Corner, never run that one. Might surf the web, not sure.

I haven't seen Darren around for a while so I'll go ahead and post a link to his write up on Chicken Corners. I ran it as far as Hurrah Pass with him before I had to head home. We also ran Fins 'n Things, Bull Canyon, and Gemini Bridges. I'd say if you are new to offroad driving, Fins will be a fun challenge. There are a few 35+ degree inclines to negotiate that rate pretty high on the newbie pucker factor scale. Bull Canyon and Gemini Bridges are easy but are worth doing for the scenery. Have fun.
