When you said you aren't going to camp does that mean you're going to stay in a motel or that its a day trip for you?

Hey Adam, do you think my truck would do ok up there? As long as it's not snowing it sounds like it shouldn't be too challenging, but since you've run it before maybe you could let me know....I'd hate to get out there and hold anyone back or find out I can't climb anything :pat:
Pretacopower, you can definitely handle Bald Mountain. There are all kinds of routes to get up there, and some bypasses as well. There may be a few areas that you will probably have trouble with due more to ground clearance that anything else.

I am going to try to make this one but I can't be sure just yet. I hope I can.

I'll come down friday night, find some place in the woods to park and snooze, and meet ya whenever you want on saturday. I'll probably head out sunday night unless things are really hoppin'. (I'm pretty flexible in my schedule, honestly.)

I dont know if 4x2 will cut it, some of the trails will be difficult. DO you have a locker? I haven't done these trails before, but some rate a 5 (in the Backcountry adventures book ) which is the upper limit for most stock SUVs, maybe a bit more than upper limit. I think Adam did it in his stock 3rd Gen Runner, but he has 4x4.

Does anyone have a trail ride in a guide or any map coordinates to help me locate the area? How about directions. Somehow I missed this earlier. I will speak with the boss and see if the weekend is plausible.

Count me out My truck isn't anywhere near ready yet.

Jim- I went to Big Bear with my 4x2 (locked) and did fine....with the exception of really steep hills. With such a light back end and no front wheel drive, steep rocky slopes are damn near impossible.

Is this the area?

If so there is some confusion. I think it centers around "Bald Mountain" as there are 3 that I know of. One between Mono Lake and Mammoth, One near Kennedy Meadows and the one near Shaver Lake.

After reading more throughly and seeing Bull is staying in Oakhurst the above map looks to be the area. Illion is thinking of the one near Mammoth -Mono I think?

Which one is it?

dont stay in Oakhurst

I visit this area often , if not for wheeling for snowboarding and camping...
Oakhurst is gonna be WAAAAY out of your way if your going to Bald mnt. or Red Lake.... If you want to rent a room get one in Shaver Lake ... There are tons of campsites if you wanna rough it , and usually there are no camp hosts this time of year so it should be free ,,,,,, I just did Bald Mnt last sunday and it snowed on us, but not enough to stick to the ground... If most of you are stockers I would stick to Bald Mnt, for the more modded guys Red and Coyote and Mirror lakes are awsome , Dusy aint too far either .....

If you guys have any more questions , I'll try my best to answer them

Later

Camp Edison would be perfect , because it is literally smack dab between Bald Mnt and Red Lake. Most likely there would be a fee at Camp Edison though.. I'm going to Red Lake this afternoon and camping there overnight to hit Coyote in the morning.. I'll post some pics on monday.. I dont know how big your group is going to be, but there are camp sites at both Bald Mnt and Red Lake

I am still interested in going, but need to know if this is the area (the map I posted above). Will someone please post directions to the campground from 99. You all seem to know the area, but I don't, and need to know before making a decision.

The map you posted is the right area... 168 is the main road to any campground or trail you'll be staying at.....

Ok guys after some advise here it would probably better to meet at Camp Edison at Shaver Lake. Here is a NAD 83 GPS Waypoint CampEdison N37 07 18.7 W119 18 23.3

I am trying to get a place in Shaver Lake at the moment. Camping should be OK at Camp Edison, but you can check at 559 841 3134. The book I have list they charge $20-40 per site. Just give them a call.

Here are some map pics of where it is.

Logistics: 10 am 2 Oct at Camp Edison by Shaver Lake see above post. Will do 3 Oct too .

CB Channel 4 and FRS Channel 4
Dont know if cellphones work, but PM me and I'll send you mine.

Lots of camping spots by Shaver Lake but Camp Edison will be the prime one. The boss is not into camping yet, so I'll probably have to stay in Motel or B&B. Or drop her off there and just sleep in 4R with pooch, but he has a problem so that might be dangerous.

So far in:
Scottiac
Me

Maybees :
Skyrat
Robinhood
Birdman

Anybody else interested post here.

Stayig at Lakeshore

I'm going to stay at the Lakeshore Resort they have some cabins and is located by Huntington Lake (25 min from Shaver Lake). AT least they allow dogs and some cabins have kitchens.

If you are interested check them out at www.lakeshoreresort.com .
