Hi Guys,

Yesterday, my 1995 Toyota pickup 4wd 4cyl with 215k miles wouldn't start. Took it to my mechanic, and it ends up that the timing chain guide is busted. If everything goes smoothly, repairs would be $1300.

I looked into doing it myself, and even though I've done some minor work on this myself, I don't have the time or confidence to do it myself.

So now, I'm just going to get rid of it and start new. My question to you YotaTechers is, how much can I expect to sell this for? It also has a salvage title (have pics from when it was salvaged. Damage was pretty minor and I was surprised it was salvaged). And like I said, 215k miles. Just trying to find out what to expect. Thanks!

Do you have current pictures?

If the truck still looks like it does in the pictures..with a busted timing chain, I'd be surprised if you got $750-800 for it. With a fixed timing chain, you could probably get 2-3k

Oh and by the way, I spent about $600 at 150k miles to have the whole undercarriage sprayed with truck liner to preserve it from the common issue of rusting

A truck that does not run to me is perhaps worth a little more then scrap price.

Unless the body and interior is perfect.

Then not much more.

As is, $300-$400 (scrap price), fixed $2-3k. Tough position to be in. If you start the repairs and can't finish I doubt you'll find a mechanic to take it over.

why??? Tahoe area barely uses any salt in their deicing mix, if at all, due to environmental impact - IIRC it's mostly sand.

I look at CL trucks in our area all the time. Prices here in CA are slightly higher than the rest of the US, likely due to low-rust and high demand because they get used a lot for work trucks and offroading.

Based on the pics, if you had the front fixed, I'd guess you could sell for maybe $4000 to the right buyer, on a good day. To get more than $4k for a 20yr old pickup, it better be in damn good condition, have super low miles, or have lots of aftermarket stuff included in the sale. If your truck isn't running, I'd guess you would only get $800-1000 maximum. Scrap price is probably around $250 and I think yards only take cut up vehicles nowadays - would be worth much more to part it out since interior looks fairly clean.

The quote you got for fixing seems about average from when my t-chain went a few years ago and I got quotes. I ended up fixing it myself for about $200-300 in parts. If I were to go about it again, now that my mileage is around 210k and because my truck is still in great condition, I would likely spend the extra $ for a full rebuild from CT Engineering, who is a very good Toyota rebuilder in the region.

With you being in Cali, those trucks are a dime a dozen.. In the north east or Midwest, you might get 4k for that. But in Cali? No sir

Reman injectors are $25 each, and his aren't reman. How much time to pull that W56 and transfer case? That's what you're paying for when you spend $200 on a trans, and that is what they go for with 200k+ if they're actually selling. With the body dinged up and 200k+ I'll be the third to say that neighborhood of $1000 is reasonable, probably a little less.

I'm in the "it's not worth diddly if it doesn't run" camp. It would be one thing if you were selling a 2-yr old truck that didn't run, but once it gets up to 20-yrs old the savvy buyer has no way to tell what else is wrong with it. Sadly, you'll almost certainly come out ahead if you get it fixed, then turn right around and sell it. Only you know that the rest of the truck is cherry.

Truck prices are VERY regional, as others have said. And since we all use Craigslist for old vehicles, you CAN sit in Tennessee and talk about California prices (if you're willing to waste a bunch of time on your computer.) And if you check, you'll find a lot of trucks with "all it needs is a head gasket, I just don't have time to do it." Junk.

Don't worry too much about the salvage title; it's almost meaningless with a 20-yr old truck. New vehicles are insured (collision coverage), and when they get pranged the insurance company "totals" it and has to issue a salvage title to the buyer. But who carries collision coverage on a 20-yr old truck? When it gets walloped and the frame is bent, the owner puts a few junk yard parts on it and turns it around. No insurance, no salvage title.

Yeah, you could part it out. If you wanted to get into the junkyard business. If you live in a nice condo and have a real job, it's not really worth it.

Guess I need to start listing my parts for sale in CO. Reman Denso injectors are $25 all day long on Rockauto and Ebay. I just replaced a 6 port Lexus injector, reman for $35. The fuel rail is in my previous post, $30. W56 with 200k is a $250 trans...on a good day. Parts for these older trucks are a dime a dozen, I don't even bother pulling much off before I scrap one anymore. It's just not worth it, especially compared to what you'll get compared to parts for anything year 2000 and up.

What started out with a timing chain guide repair for $1300 sounds high to me. I think my local repair shop does a Timing Chain for $250 if I recall right. I would check for a few more estimates.

In certain areas you can get quite a bit for parts but it can be a real hassel dealing with people and you wind up with a shell. Most larger parts can only be sold locally and that depends on the demand for them in your area.

Including a $10 core, ie what used injectors are worth, makes $26.79 for a reman. I wouldn't pull a set of injectors and go through the hassle/fees of selling them for even $50, which is why myself and others are valuing the truck as we are. Maybe you would and that's fine, but that doesn't mean that anyone who wouldn't "doesn't have a clue".



I was thinking the same. You could also post a "gigs" listing on CL offering a few hundred and see what rolls in. Quality is a tossup going that route but you could always "help" and make sure things are going back together more or less as they should.
