1982 Toyota Truck Query
Hi,
First time poster and I need some help. Now I know this isn't the right place in these forums to be asking for buying advice but I'm not allowed to post in the classifieds for some unknown reason. So please cut me some slack. That being said, here is a link to the truck in question:
http://www.kijiji.ca/v-cars-trucks/p...ationFlag=true
As it says there, it is a 1982 toyota pickup, 336000km (not million as it says), manual transmission, diesel, RWD, sunroof, new exhaust, new glow plugs, replaced master and slave cylinders, rebuilt transmission, claimed 40mpg, asking $1200. What it doesn't say that I have found out from the seller is that only 2000km have been put on the rebuilt tranny, tires are at about 60% tread and it is a 5 speed (so tranny is an L50). Have not seen it in person yet.
So is this worth what he is asking? Should I be worried about the rebuilt tranny and replaced master and slave cylinders being a recurring problem? And is his 40mpg claim truthful?
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

No one can tell you if it's a good buy or not because we have not seen it in person. Diesels are rare and parts are hard to find, but if you ever decide to swap you'll find a donor for your motor quickly and it won't cost you much to make it a 20r or 22r. Look for frame rot and cracks, floor board especially around the cab mounts. Expect this truck to be very, very slow. And I think 40mpg is pushing it, maybe on a flat highway at 55, empty bed.
Master cylinders and slave cylinder are cheap to replace, are not a known problem, just normal maintenance on a truck this old with this much mileage, probably not the first time it was replaced too. 1200$ is cheap for a diesel pickup of that year considering it is in good shape overall.

it's "worth" what your willing to pay !!
to someone else it may not be worth anything , but to some it may be worth more ... so who knows ?
best advice I can offer is , check for rust .. frames are notorious for rusting , especially on the gas tank side - inner - and rear spring hanger locations ..
cab floors are also notorious for rust ..
if you like what you see , then buy it !

Thank you for all the advice everyone.
I realize the price is dependent upon the person and how much they are willing to spend for something they desire, but I was also curious if $1200 (or even $1000 if I can bring it down) is a price you (the commenter) would be willing to pay for this truck (if you were in the market for such a truck). And I would also like it if someone could comment on the rebuilt transmission and how it has 2000km on it since the rebuild. Is this something I should watch out for? How likely is a rebuilt tranny going to cause problems in a 1982 toyota pickup?
I will make sure to look out for rust on all parts of the frame and floor board. Thanks for all the help!

$1200 isn't much for a Toyota at all.. The diesel and wiring is worth almost that much alone here in the states. If the frame and body are relatively rust free, it runs and shifts cleanly, then buy it! A rebuilt tranny is a toss up, but if it feels right when driving it, then it's probably right.
Buy the thing, and if you hate it, sell it off.. Not a huge investment here.
