Corral Canyon OHV Area Rehab:SoCal
As most of the SoCal wheelers know Corral Canyon OHV area suffered 79% burns this summer during the "Horse Fires" 2006. It has been closed and there is no date so far as to when it will reopen for OHV use. MarcP PM'd me a site with a link to a power point presentation of how extensive the damage was and it included contact information for volunteers to assist in the repair and rebuilding of this area.
So I dropped Richard Tull a quick note to see if there was anything that could be done now to help out.
Mr. Tull
I am writing you to ask what type of volunteer work is needed to help repair the Horse Fire damage in Corral Canyon. I am associated with Yotatech.com and Toyota Territory Off Road Association (TTORA) and would be willing to solicit help with these groups. Both of these groups are members of Tread Lightly. I have spent countless hours enjoying the areas that have been burned and would like the opportunity to help return this area to it's former condition. At the same time I understand that it will take time, money and lots of manual labor for it to be opened for use with minimal impact on the environment.
Could you give me an idea of dates and the type of work that is needed.
This will help me ask for specific skills when I put this out on the online forums.
Please let me know whatever I can do to help.
Eric C Chamberlin
And he quickly returned the email with this:
Eric,
Thanks for contacting me about the Corral Canyon re-opening effort. As of this moment I still do not have dates or time frames because we are still in the process of seeing what our agency is going to provide in the form of money for rehab efforts. I am adding you to the list of folks who will be contacted as soon as I have some solid information.
Thanks for stepping up.

Just wanted to make you all aware that if they feel we can help I will forward the requests to this thread so you can lend a hand if you feel so inclined. Every little bit will help and this also supports our good standing in the SoCal area as off roaders.
Could make for some good times out there working on the trails with you bunch of yoyos and our off sense of humor!

I'd like to help out also. can't remember where I found this power point but last slide said...
"The Forest has talked with key members of the local OHV community about
the impacts of the fire,
the need to physically construct barriers to define the designed routes and reconstruct the ones obliterated by fire fighting efforts,
the need for volunteer, peer based, OHV patrols in the area,
the need for volunteers to help install/maintain fence
and the need to educate users.
Before Corral Canyon can re-open, the damage from the fire must be repaired. We are looking for volunteers to help in this effort. If you or your club are willing to volunteer please contact Richard Tull, OHV Program Manager, at (619) 445 6235 ext 3451 rtull@fs.fed.us"

That is at the end of the power point I got from Marc. Same same.
If you have ever been there before it looks pretty wiped out from the pics on the slide show. Probably be a long time before we can wheel it again.
Will be very cool to give alittle back to an area I basically learned to wheel at.

Cool thing about CC is that you can go extremely easy or you can really push it depending on the trail you run. Most of those areas had very decent access before the fires and if they had dozers out there cutting new fire breaks it should not be too bad to get out there.
CC was one of the "green" places to wheel here in San Diego. It will take some time to be green again.

Funny thing is that that guy from the Church we turned around at didn't recall the forestry service offering to have anybody help with restoring the area the last time it burned. Maybe it changed or maybe he noticed the dirt cloud in the parking lot (oops) DON'T REMIND ME THAT I'M GONNA GO TO HELL FOR DOING THAT EITHER!! I KNOW ALREADY!!
