vsc = vehicle skid control
atrac = traction control

both behave different based on what the ecu receives.

I understand that, but what are the differences?

VSC technology helps prevent two factors that frequently causes drivers to lose control of their vehicle. Example: front or rear wheel slip on a banking turn where the road has slick spots.

Traction Control helps maintain traction on wet, icy, loose or uneven surfaces. Like VSC, traction control apples wheel brakes individually and reduces output to help assist the drive with control of the vehicle.

Both sounds similar but think of ATRAC as a highly intelligent traction system that acts like a locker. VSC as a skid control system that keeps the vehicle rolling in the direction your vehicle is pointing.

Hope that helps. Check out toyota.com for some cool flash stuff. Not sure what they still have and not have but they had some cool stuff back when the VSC and ATRAC was first introduced. I'm sure it's still the same.

good luck

Bad news for us 07 FJ Cruiser owners...

Very reliable anonymous source (I believe he is under NDA at this point, hey the Government leaks so why not Toyota?) told me that no upgrades are planned at this point for us regarding this issue. The reason being is its a whole new wiring harness, computer, ABS system updates, etc, etc, etc. So no firmware upgrades for us, bummer.

I'm still going to wait and see if there are any long term side effects to this modification. After dinner & beers with this individual and his experience with the FJ and offroad driving in general, he believes that the less than 1% of the time that we would need this modification does not justify the risk of warranty issues. After the warranty runs out splice away... his opinion and somewhat mine at this point.

I'll continue to monitor this post and look forward to some long term feedback from you guys in 9-12 months.

Yeah, I have really been thinking about this too.
When you have both on, it is almost like being locked up front.

But if something goes wrong...
Warranty is not going to cover it.

It's a Toyota what could possibly go wrong....

I'll do the mod when I get some spare time, with the way work has been going lately that might be in 2008.

Will, if you get a chance, ask your dealer if this voids the warranty.
I had my Inchworm Gear E Locker guard put on today, and I yakked with them about it..

They had emailed corporate and have not heard back if there is a way to flash the computer.
More than likely they did a variation on the method Tankota did.

One of the service guy's told me if we do it, it should not void the warranty at all.

Will, you do this yet?
Again, my dealer told me now problemo if I do the hack.

I have the male spade connectors, but not T taps to splice with.
I am not sure what size to buy, or are they all the same?
I have never ever used a T tap before.

I am ready to do this mod, perhaps over Christmas break.

PS, here is another link with some info from Terry Baker who works for All Pro.
He has done 25 plus FJ Cruisers already.

I plan on doing this mod but I'm going to do all my wiring (lights, second battery and A-track "Lockout Bypass") at the same time so I'm still waiting on my rocker switches. I plan on making the hack selectable using another switch on my center console.

Wow, great idea was it not

No, seriously, there was a thread by him over on fjcruiserforums site that he had done quite a few of them.
Sometimes when I copy and past it does not take, and that was the previous thing on my clipboard then.

Now we are waiting to see what Toyota will do for us.
Not just the new Special Edition models, but all FJs built in November on have this hack done from the factory.

We have no idea how they did it.
Either with a new ECU, or a flash of the ECU, who knows.
It would be nice if Toyota took care of 50K of us who do not have it done.
If they do not, I am snippin' the wires.

Yep, time for me to whip out my Gerber multitool and snip away.
It is not gonna happen, Toyota is sweeping it under the rug.

At least it's an easy mod.

I think it might be a good idea to politely inquire of the corporate office to support their FJ family.

I wonder if someone could make a plug to use in the harness, or if the best way is to just cut the wire and tap to the other one as done via the Alex method.

I have read some will install switches, but I do not plan on it.
Some have also hacked so the locker can be used in 2WD and 4high.

I do not see the need to run the locker (also known as the gray wire mod via the Tacoma crowd) outside of 4low.

Well I got tired of waiting for all my parts and I'm jonesin' to tinker so I went a head and did the Atrac mod. 10 minutes later and it's done

I unwrapped the e-tape to the loom cover and pulled out as much wire as I could to get some slack but it seemed to be a bit tight for me. I fabbed up a little jumper wire spliced it in and used a quick splice on the Black & Orange one a that is that.

Now I guess I got to go try it out.

Where did you get the T tap at?
I was at Radio Shack a few weeks back, and they did not have the type in the pic at the beginning of this thread.

Also it seems to me it is easier to do the snip under the hood than do it that other way the guy did by tapping 12 v into the harness in the cab.

I tapped into the black & orange on the other connector like it shows but I cound't find a t tap either so I just used a quick splice. I think he did his so he could disconnect but I'm leaving mine connected so the quick splice works fine. Look here at the TTP-2 type connector.

You put it around the wire to be tapped into and the end of the splice right beside it, close it with a pair of pliers and that's it. I'll probably gob some liquid electrical tape around to seal it up a bit.
