OK, OK, it's Sunset Beach in Gearhart. You can drive from Seaside to Astoria (15 miles +/-) on sand, picnic, surf, camp, fish, clam, fly kites, do donuts, play and if you're a tourist, swim. Less than two hours and one tank round trip from Portland. After my Sand Lake trip, I didn't even bother airing down and had no problems in the deepest stuff.

First of all, great pics! Second, I never knew this drive existed. How cool is that! I might have to suggest this drive to my parents when I visit and go with them in Redmond, then head to "the beach house" in Manzanita.

I think my dad's Outback would handle the sand just fine.

Thanks Christian! Manzanita (Nehalem Bay SP) is my favorite beach in Oregon.

Oh yeah, an Outback would handle everything easily. The hardest part is the South beach access with deep sand. Work up some speed before hitting the sand and keep it floored for about 100 yds. to the hardpack (while driving around the tourists in their buried rental cars).

You'll find that access at the first light North of the Seaside/Gearhart border. Turn left and go straight through the village and go right at the end. Then a few hundred yards and left again at the condo project and there you are. Exit the beach in Astoria at Ft. Stevens and the South Jetty of the Columbia River. That'll take you back to 101.

Did you engage the locker, or just have A Trak on, or none at all?

C'mon down! This beach doesn't need a flag, it isn't a designated ORV park. The only thing is the unpredictable nature of coastal weather. It usually turns into a spur of the moment or night before decision based on latest forecasts for fog/rain/wind.

I used 4Lo w/locked rear, usually 2nd or 3rd is plenty of torque for pulling through anything. You want to disable A-TRAC in sand, it will eventually bring you to a stop in deep stuff where you'll want wheelspin on demand.

FJ has insane traction with the mild A/T Nittos. Others with more aggressive M/T's have reported digging in where A/T's float. Prolly nothing that can't be cured by airing down.

Christian, I should mention to watch tides and moon phase before driving the entire length. On a full moon high tide, you'll be forced into the deepest stuff in a couple of spots near the base of the dunes. Might be a bit much for a Subie at that point, but someone will come along after awhile just in case.

Sounds like an awesome trip. I just finished an amazing book on Lewis and Clark (Undaunted Courage by Ambrose), and a beach jaunt like this would help put the L & C adventure further into perspective - especially if it was winter.

Back in High School when I lived in the PNW, I could care less about US History. Now it fascinates me. What better way to explore it than in an FJ?

Christian, then Ft. Clatsop, a recreation of the L&C winter lodging built on the same site (it's thought) is a must see. It will send your imagination flying. I read Ambroses' book, too. Amazing chronicle of their journey.

Peter, yeah, we have to take advantage of the good wx when we can.

Elton, busy too. Although the aquarium was worth a visit last I was there even without Keiko may he RIP. Your town has probably changed more than any other at the coast besides Lincoln City.
