Try this.
1. Turn the ignition key to the ?ACC? or ?LOCK? position with the odometer
reading shown.
2. Turn the ignition key to the ?ON? position while holding down the trip meter reset knob. Hold down the knob for at least 5 seconds.
The indicator light flashes and the bars displayed in the odometer disappear
gradually. The odometer indicates ?000000? and the light goes off.

well i tihnk i did it a little differently , but somehow i managed to get it to reset.
i tihnk you have to hold down the reset and then turn the key to off then back to acc. then the countdown starts . i should have paid more attention.

ok , now on my 4th oil change , i finally called toyota service while i had a piece of paper and a pen to write down exactly what they told me this time.
heres how to do it:
turn key to on postion (so that the odometer spot is showing) push and hold down the odo reset button, turn key to the off postion and back to on. while holding the button down.
this starts a series of dashes on the odometer, its counting down , keep holding down until it reads 000000, then you can release the button.
he told me some of the vehicles were programed to do this in the trip "A" postion. mine worked in the odometer postion.
