I was just wondering if anyone out there had pulled a rear end with a locking diff out of a tacoma and put in into a T. Can this even be done?

 

T 100's have 8.4" rear axles whereas the Tacoma's with the lockers and all 3rd Gen 4Runners had an 8" rear axle, so it would only be possible if you swapped out the whole axle

 

Anything can be done depending on your resources and capabilities. I recommend searching for the best information.

 

Ok good to know. Is it pretty easy for a mechanically competent person to swap the whole axle out? Are the mounts basically the same?

 

The only problem with swapping in a tacoma or 4runner rear end is that the
T100 is wider than those. also, I believe that the 3rd gen. 4runners that have a diff lock are coil springs with link bars, and pan hard bar. So you would have to try to set those up. Swapping the whole rear end for another one is not difficult at all. Its pretty self explanitory and straight foreward. you would probably be better off trying a tundra rear end but even then the E-brake and some other parts (can't remeber which ones) don't line up right. Once again, there is a size difference. Tundra is wider. Looked into this when I replaced my housing. Too much work and not enough time or money to swap at the time.

I have been looking for a good combo vehicle. The T100 has become an item of interest.
In my searches and phone calls for the limited # of goodies for them, I have been told by many that the best way to get a locker for the T100, is to go with ARB. While the ARB is a little work in itself and a little $$, it is cheaper and quicker than an entire axle swap.
As others have said earlier in this thread, the T100 rear is stronger and wider than the GEN 3's.
