Clutch grinding, poor shifting, cracked clutch pedal bracket

My family and I just returned from a 3000 mile trip pulling a 18 travel trailer with my 1997 4X4 T100 70K miles. My clutch pedal bracket was cracking all along the way. My symptoms; difficulty shifting into lower gears and although I hadn’t really noticed it I had a change in clutch engagement position. By the time we arrived home I was grinding almost every shift. I thought my transmission syncros were going out. Then I noticed my clutch was barely disengaging. Aha, Master/Slave cylinder failure. Had my wife push the peddle in while I watched the cylinders. The only thing I noticed was the firewall at the Master cylinder flexed quite a bit with pedal pressure. At the time I just thought “cheesy”. Then did a web search found a thread and photos of a cracked clutch pedal bracket. I ran out and checked mine, cracked big time just like the photos.

Here is a link to a good thread to help check out:
http://www.4x4wire.com/forums/showfl...&Number=231519

Thanks to Perp at 4X4wire.com that guy really saved me time and probably money chasing this defect down. The part numbers posted were spot on for my 97

Symptoms: Grinding gears, difficult to shift, clutch engages too soon (near bottom of compression) Firewall flexes when peddle is depressed.

I ordered all the parts Perpetrators listed from Toyotapart.com

Product Information
Product Quantity Price Sub Total
PLATE, CLUTCH PEDAL P/N: 55113-34010 1 $4.14 $4.14
SUPPORT SUB-ASSY, CL P/N: 55107-34030 1 $54.56 $54.56
BUSH P/N: 90386-04009 2 $1.22 $2.44
Shipping: $11.34
UPS - UPS Ground (Insured)
Handling Charge: $2.00
Order Total: $74.48

I would have never guessed a cracked bracket would have caused my tranny not to shift properly. It would have been the last thing I checked. Anyway this is a known problem with T100's

Good luck all.

No, that’s news to me. I talked to the dealer/parts manager when shopping for parts and expressed my concern that this wasn't a recall. They told me this was not recalled because it wasn’t considered safety related. I didn't question him because I had read others exasperation about the same thing in other forums. I didn’t receive a recall notice either and I know I’m in the system because I received the one for the tie rod replacement. But hey, if you know for sure, that’s great info for the next guys. It’s too late for me but if you can post a link or something that would be helpful.
That’s what this is all about, getting info
Thanks

No it was not a recall but it should have been..I was stuck out of town and had no choice but to pay a Toyota Dealer to fix it..Cost me $300 and the bracket was about $75..Buy it and o it your self very sipmple to do..It unbolts on the firewall to the master cylinder for the clutch them 2 or 3 bolts...takes about a 1-2 hours to do it the first time then 20 mins if you have to do..

I know it's at least a known repair issue because the parts manager had the part number on a post it note next to his computer. And Toyota has added a backup plate to the original installation on the back side of the fire wall. If you ask me it's still cheezy and weak. I guess if I get another 70K out of it I'll survive.

I mainly started this thread to make sure people like us could find information about this issue by searching for typical symptoms, in the hopes that I could prevent someone from spending time and money on incorrect trouble shooting.

Even if its covered by Toyota at least we know to ask once we find the problem.

It happened to my 92, I replaced all sorts of crap before I discoverd that it was the bracket. The fix was to weld it up with extra metal so it would never happen again.

My 96 starting doing this early on, (under 50k) and I had the firewall stiffened. Later (70k) the bracket crumpled and an area service representative who was new wouldn't authorize warranty work , so I had the same body shop put in a newer style from a wreck. I submitted it to NHTSA just cause I was pissed and it might be a safety issue in some cases.
