3400 Oil Pump Repacement

Hi All!
I am purchasing one of our old work trucks. It is a 97 T-100 with a 3400 v6 2wd ext cab. It has 200k miles but the oil pump is weak. The pressure has dropped recently and it started to tick so he took in out of service. He had it checked out and was told the oil pump needs to be replaced. Is there any information on how to replace this oil pump? It looks as if the entire front end of the motor has to come apart. Any information on replacement that you all can come up with for me would be great.

Thanks!

Oil pressure is notoriously low fer the 3.4L engine. Best thing to do is to pressure test the pump/oil pressure...stop pulling and guessing.

Ticking could be a sticking valve. Do a leak down test to make sure...

In order to remove the oil pump you must remove the oil pan due to the oil pickup being bolted down. There are two bolts holding the oil pickup in place. Theese two bolts are of the six or so that hold the oil deflection plate to the block. If you are working on a four wheel drive, you must remove the front differential. It's not fun but, can be done. Good luck.

If the oil pan must come off, the rod and main bearing shells might be easily replaced then.

It's very likely that the low oil pressure issue falls more squarely on loose rod and main bearing clearances than on the oil pump anyway.

Rod and main shells are very inexpensive, if you're gonna change out the oil pump, put em in.

^^ It is more than likely bearing clearances. Oil pumps generally outlast the rest of the engine.

BUT, this thread is about 9 years old.
