Unhappy 1995 T100 engine stalls as soon as I hit the brake from idle

1995 T100, 6 cyl, 4wd, ext cab 5ze

Ok, this a strange issue and I broke down last night. I went around a corner and the car just lost all power, and the electrical was going nuts on the dash.

To make long story short, I replaced the battery and had it towed to a shop close by. The alternator is fine and the engine starts great. And the battery is new. The engine idle’s and revs up great. But, as soon you hit the brake to put it into gear (on turn on the the lights) the engine dies.

The same day it broke down, I had all the fluids done - transfer case, tranny, front and rear diff, and coolant. Could they have something to do with it?

The shop I took to too thinks it is electrical but they can’t figure it out. It’s going to another more qualified mechanic next week but he can’t get to it for a bit.

Is is there a common electrical issue that could explain the stall when you try to put it into gear? The engine oil pressure and temp are perfect. The engine sounds perfect. Maybe the battery moved when I went around the corner and the battery terminal hit some metal shorting something out?

Maybe checking that the neutral safety switch is tight and secure by the trans? General location. Seems like you got a stick shift huh?

No fluid leaks anywhere? Aside from water.

Sounds like a classic case of a bad ground. It sounds like you have a bad ground and some important circuit in your truck is getting its ground through the brake light bulbs. Pressing the brakes applies battery voltage to the circuit and cuts the ground to the important one causing the engine to shut off. It's a common problem on most any cars and will cause some very interesting things to happen. Can be tricky to figure out if you don't know what to look for.

There should be a ground bolt behind the driver kick panel. This ground feeds most of the accessories in the truck including many of the lights and the fuel pump and the circuit opening relay (fuel pump relay).

Thanks for the replies! I really appreciate it. As you all indicated, the ground was the culprit. The tech ran a new ground wire from underneath the driver kick panel to the ground bolt near the battery. It perfect. Crazy. I must say a new high end battery really helped the truck too. Or maybe it is getting more power from an improved ground. Either way, it’s better.

I just bought this truck for $1500 with no rust in Asheville NC. I’ve put a $1000 into it so far.
