What am I missing with my dimmer switch?

What am I missing with my dimmer switch?
So I have swapped out my entire interior harness and my new harness has a 4 pinned connector with 3 wires going into it (4th spot is blank) in the spot that the interior dimmer should plug in. On my old harness, the connector is only a 2 pin and only has 2 wires going into it. The 4runner is a 1984 originally carb'd and the donor harness is from an '87 or so. Every picture of every dimmer I can find for sale or just on the internet looks like the dimmer that is already in my truck which this connector won't fit in. Even pictures of dimmer switches advertised to fit the '87. How is this possible? Am I missing something? Why can't I find the correct mystery dimmer that I am looking for? Is there a way to just bypass the dimmer switch so my interior lights just work? I don't care right now if the dim...I just need gauge lights at night and I can worry about the whole dimmer thing later. Please help me out! Thanks!

You should be able to bypass the dimmer switch alltogether. You can check a manual or online for the diagram, but for mine you need to connect the W-B (white with black stripe) wire to the R-Bl (red with blue stripe) wire. The green one does not need to be connected for the dash lights to work. You can find these wires connected to the dimmer switch below and left of the steering wheel. In order to access them, you will need to drop the bottom plastic cover to the steering column cover. I did this to mine last night because I have a bad switch and can't find a replacement. My heater control lights and tranny position indicator lights still didn't come on, but at least I can see how fast I am going at night! Hope this helps
