I found this review of the Liberty online:
"We had a lot of other goodies on our tester, some of which I?d delete if I could. We had a roof-mounted light bar that was part of the Customer Preferred Package that gave off a lot of light but blinded oncoming drivers."

I guess the dealer never told them those were offroad lights.
I guess the dealer never did, cause everyone around here drives with the covers off....

Think about it, there's nothing stopping you from using them when on the highway and shutting them off whenever you see a car or whatever if you don't have covers on. Maybe you don't use them on the highway, but the coppers don't know that. I know you can get the same treatment in BC. They are off-highway use after all, the 5-oh doens't want to be pulling someone out of the ditch because you blinded them...

Well I got blinded on night from those freakin HID and hit a patch a snow and almost lost it, but they can't cover those.

Any light is going to blind, how about someone who forget to turn there high beams off, god knows I have come across them enough.

So i am sure the '5-oh' doesn't want to be pulling people out of a ditch cuase they got blinded by HIDs or Highbeams...

My normal lights were 80/100s and I only got hassled by a cop once at a RIDE (DUI pervention) spot check and that was for not having my normal headlights on I told the officer that the low beams were had burnt out the night before and he said "OK just get those lights fixed soon and have a good night." [this was just before I got the 80/100s]
Anyway for our vehicles the high/lows are counted as 2 because only one mode is available at a time therefore if you had six only one set would have to be covered.
Unless you have one of those crazy multi light setups I don't think a cop would hassle you too much provided the lights were all aimed properly.
edit: and if they did fight it chances of the cop turning up for something this mickey mouse are pretty poor and if he does talk to the crown/ADA and try for a deal.
I said 4 total did I not?
I don't thin the cover thing is a law though but it can't turn.

Cops never bugged me about my Hellas, covered or not.
I tended to get dirty looks and a pull over or 2 for my loud exhaust on my old Jeep.

yea, depending on how much the ticket is though, i may decide just to mail a check, the officer told me straight up that it wasn't a big ticket, so if it's reasonable and not worth the trouble, i just assume pay it. but has anyone gotten KC covers to fit PIAA lights? I haven't found a cover that is made by PIAA, so I bought 4 daylights covers and hope they fit with a little tape or whatever it takes.

Im with the people that believe POLICE need to go back to there roots and start doing what they are supposed to. Like investigating crimes. In my home town it takes 2+ days to get the sheriffs to come out to take prints if something is stolen. If they come out at all. they most likely will ignore you unless its something really really expensive like a BRAND NEW Car.

they need to start ticketing people for
going to slow
driving with highbeams on
driving with misadjusted headlights
not signalling
driving slow in the fast lane
tailgating
Road Rage
these are the things they should be ticketing

they should be putting people in jail.
for DUI automatic 30 day license suspension
Stealing

and doing way more investigation of those things.

Id check and make sure its not a moving violation first i make a point out of fighting all moving violations i could care less aobut the price of the ticket. with a moving violation you sometimes end up paying 10 times more then the ticket in increased insurance over the next 3 years.

I remember when that law went into affect here in Calif, It was to stop all the Pimpin Bling 4x4's from running with there lights on back in the early 80's, They just havent ammended it any but really theres no need, If the police would just have some common sence at times and not be a pest.

There is also a law on the type and briteness of headlights to boot, This is to enforce you from using something like aircraft lights inplace of your headlights (cough) and using offroad lights as driving lights, They must have an amount of diffusion and angle for normal streetdriving perposes.

Remember, If it wasnt for traffic violations most serialkillers wouldnt be cought.

That ticket sounds rediculous. Just another stupid ticket so cops can make some money.

I'm glad they are still slack in NC. I've been flashed once for having them on in town in traffic but all he did was flash his lights and ask me to turn them off. I shouldn't of had them on in traffic in the first place but atleast the officer was nice about it.

I dispatch for a police department, an unreal number of criminals are caught by getting pulled over for things like equipment violations. It allows the officer to scan your vehicle for anything illicit and make sure you are a driver in good standing order. While you are stopped your SSN is getting run for past violations and active warrents by the dispatcher also.

Getting pulled over for such a thing and getting a ticket for it though is quite another thing. The dept. I work with gives warnings 90% of the time or more. Police depts. need income to function also though, and if people don't want to pay for it with taxes they will pay for it on the road and in the courts.

Remember, these are people with wives and kids that do a risky and thankless job that is also quite necessary. The vast majority of the public lacks a full understanding of how police function and what hey must deal with.

I agree fully Lamm, we need the police, I know officers are just like you and me. But to give a ticket because my OHV lights were uncovered is completely different. If I was speeding I wouldn't say anything thats different, but equipment failure, even as basic as lights or front window tint seems rediculous, to me at least.

I think something like 80% of officers are killed during traffic stops. That means the people they are pulling over are criminals. Now the criminals must do something wrong in order for the police to pull them over. By having laws as previously aforementioned, they are able to execute a traffic stop with reason. Another reason why officers pull people over for simple things is that, that is an effective way of finding wanted criminals. I dont remember the percentages, but something like 40% of wanted criminals are caught during traffic stops

Yes a ticket for uncovered lights is ridiculous, but if you go put covers on it, I am sure the judge will let you go. From my experience, as long as you are not driving like a moron, they will leave you alone, after all, they have MUCH better things to do than write tickets for minor infractions. I say get the lights covered, or disconnect them...go to court, and you will get off.

And thats what I plan to do, the covers are in the mail as we speak. I guess its tough for me to realize just because I have no money and my parents have no patience, not matter what it's for, just the fact that I got the ticket gives them a good enough reason to take away my truck untill summer starts (June). I'm bitter, I don't have my 4Runner, whatever.

anyway you could explain to them that you messed up and quickly realized it. Tell them that you found a solution and you will have no further problems.

Well, I know about how many criminals are caught by traffic stops, but since I am not a criminal, why didn't he just give me a warning? He saw that I was young, he saw my backpack sitting on the passenger seat.

haha i dont THINK he gave it to you because you were young.

Were you respectful?
Were you honest?
Did you try to argue?

As you stated earlier, officers are human, so you will get the traditional mix as you do in any environment. You get the A-holes, the lazies, the power hungries...all of them.

Hopefully you will go to court, and get off...the ticket that is.
