Tail light wiring .HELP!!

Can anyone tell me where the green and red tail light wire runs to ? I haven't had the tail lights working for awhile .So I've been trying to figure it out when I had the time . First I checked for power at the tail light with the light switch on then with a mulitmeter ,I probed the same wire near the fuse box with the switch turned on.It doesn't get any voltage either .After I do that I lose the wire when it continues under the dash . Does the wire go directly to the combination switch or where does it go ?

Might help if you let us know what year and whether it's a 4Runner or truck. They all have different wiring colours. On 2nd and 3rd gen 4Runners the tail lights are controlled by the tail light relay, which is in turn controlled by the switch. On those the green wire won't be live until the relay is triggered. The fuse is after the relay so that also has no power until the relay is on.

My tail lights and dash lights went out. When I went under the steering wheel to find the fuse box I found a relay that was not attached to anything and fell out of all the wires. I'm thinking this is the problem. But I can't figure out where it goes. Help?

If your 87 4Runner is the same as the 86, the only red wire in the taillight circuit is 12v from the tailight relay to the source side of the 15a taillight fuse. A green wire leaves the fuse and goes to the tail lights.

my problem solved. It pugs in to a socket just about the fuses on the right side of the box in case anyone else has that problem. It fixed everything. Back to normal.
