Rear locker mod

Hey does anyone know how to do the rear diff locker mod on a 3rd gen runner, so you don't have to put it in 4Lo? I thought it was in the tech section but I couldn't find it.

If you are talking about the "grey wire mod" it makes it so that you don't have to be in 4-lo to engage the locker. There is a link about it in the nebie FAQ, a sticky at the top of the newbie section.

I just finished the grey wire mod today....well mine was blue/red, but anyways it works great. Just had a question....why did toyota design it so you could only lock the rear in 4Lo? Was it a safety precaution? I know the 5 mph interlock was so you didn't $*%$ up the diff, but have no clue about the other.

so you dont go screwing around in slippery conditions at speed. say...rainy weather, 2wd, diff lock on, off ramp...wannabe drifter driver. not a good combo...

so yes. its a safety precaution.

I'm just wondering, what's the point of this mod? I understand it allows you to engage the locker in 2WD/4-Hi, but why? The only time I've needed to engage the locker was when I was in 4-Lo.

I'm just curious.

Thanks!

Right on!! I don't like using 4Lo unless I have to. I like having my front and rear locked in 4Hi. It works great, had the rig out this past weekend. I only used 4Lo if I'm getting into some nasty ˟˟˟˟˟!

with an auto tranny it helps in deep snow and mud, using 4hi. i wish i had a manual, 3rd in 4lo is better for mud IMO.
