A possible solution for random starting
Hi
have been suffering from clicking on starter motor and no starting. headlights on turn key headlights did not dim. so went looking for a break in high amp cables. +ve cable on starter motor need a 3/4 turn to be fully tight. fingers crossed problem is solved. if not starter out and replace contacts.

Hi wyoming
Thanks for input believe fault lies in high tension circuit which is very simple to follow and test. Now it starts on turn of engine with more oomph (?)
Checked both battery connections added another earth lead from battery to engine block. Might upgrade -ve cable from starter to battery. All connections are extremtly clean. Both battery and alternator replaced in last 9 months.

This is a very common and well documented problem. Toyota ran the constant 12v for the starter relay up to the ignition switch and then back through the firewall to the starter relay. Travelling that distance, the voltage can drop enough to prevent the relay from fully switching yet you still have enough juice for your radio, lights, etc.
You can resolve this by re-routing one wire. Another option is to install a universal 'hot shot' starter relay from Summit or Jegs. I went a third option, graft in my own waterproof relay.
Before I learned of this root cause, the PO on my rig had attempted to do their own version of a hot shot relay using a spare fuel injection relay.
All the details of my saga are documented here: https://www.yotatech.com/forums/f116...-relay-276825/

Have sorted mine for now by cleaning battery terminals and using copper grease for corrsion protection. Now it starts in temps down to -3c with wind chill of -10c. Snow forcast from friday onwards. Will be a good test of adverse cold starting.
