Have I just confused HID with H4 conversion (H4 housing w H4 bulbs)?

yes.. you can do an H4 conversion with H4 halogen bulbs.... OR you can install HIDs into the H4 conversion housing. HIDs use less electricity but create light output differently to make MORE light than halogen bulbs.

I currently have H4 housings with regular old bulbs in them, what is involved in converting to HID? Simply putting different bulbs in? Do I need a different wiring harness? What would it cost me roughly to do?

Depends on what kind of HID you want to use...
Projector style (ie Audis/Acura TLs) will require modification of the housing.

H4 style HID lamps are almost plug-n-play... some require a little more wiring work than others all require you to mount the ballast/igniter somewhere in the engine bay/behind the grill... other then that...

TOFER sells a kit now I believe, www.burtmanindustries.com (another member owned company) has them.
and of course numerous ebay sellers...

Yes I sell a full line of hids. Your choice of bulb (h4 if you have the conversion) your choice of wattage 35w 55w Or hi/lo. And your choice of color yellow to purple. I will have pics of a 8000k 55w bulb as soon as they arrive from fedex.

Do you have the OE housing or were they replaced? I have seen HIDs before and they had some nasty hot spots, just curious if you did where did you get them?

i am sure i will get flamed about this. but putting HIDs in standard reflector houseings is stupid. you are blinding everybody out there. they put out to much flair and to many hotspots. if you really want HID you need to do a proper retrofit. looking at that first pic you can see how blinding that would be to oncoming traffic.

just do it right the first time and you should be good. there is a reason a retrofit costs more money

Actually if you take the time to aim them properly they are generally no worse then the OE halogens. I will agree in a mis-aimed installation they can be more hazardous then a halogen in the same condition.
Also the quality of the housing needs to be considered as well an el cheapo ebay special will be just as bad with H4 halogens as with HIDs, spend a little and get good quality Hella or Bosch housings and get them aimed and you are golden.

I know you are a mod, so please dont hurt me but this is a lot of misinformation. if you aim the lights to the point there is no glare to the other traffic, you will have the lights pointing 4ft in front of your truck rendering them useless. Even properly based HIDs in GOOD housings is still not good. you will always have hot spots. main issues is that the "filament" point is different spots on HIDs and halogens. the fact of the matter is that if you put HIDs in a reflector housing meant for halogens lights you will have to much glare and hotspots. even putting in HIDs in halogen projector lights you will have glare and hotspots. they are just not ment to have HID in them. the only real way is to buy proper ligths or a proper retrofit.

if anybody has pics of HIDs in your truck post up, you will how much glare there really is.

Sorry for the rant, but living in Socal i am always being blinded by these guys with HID kits in there cars/trucks and its annoying and dangerous

Joey what projectors did you use? Looks like merc shrouds. Also I do see some flare but I am betting that's from the glass in front of it. But from the looks of it you did a great job on it. Thanks for doing a proper retrofit and not blinding everybody.

those projector headlights on ebay are a joke, they are not even sufficent for halogen bulbs don't waste your money thinking your gonna get a true projector result. I bought my HID ballasts off ebay for like $46 shipped, and used some AMP D2s adapters with true Phillips D2s 4300k bulbs. If your not going to buy OEM ballasts your wasting your money on these other aftermarket HID set ups, they are all the same and all come from China, just buy em off ebay

thanks paranoid! they are E46 but I sold them a year ago, i'm looking at doing another retro with some FX-Rs. Those shrouds are from a VW GTI. I ended up drilling out those small holes and putting in some LEDs, looked pretty cool and was before this Audi LED phase right now, Your right there was some glare as you can see in the pic but you were right again about being the lines in the glass lens, on my next set i'm going to try and vac u form my own clear lenses.

I used to run mine like most people on here, but i've been on Hidplanet.com for some time and learned the right way to do a retro. are you on there?

the only pic i have of the LED shrouds

yeah i know what you mean, the projector doesn't look right in the 7x6 housing, those are the cheapest ebay 7x6s i could find. You should defintely consider the FX-Rs check out this output
