heater control light

i have been workin on an 85 pickup that im pretty much peicing back together and trying to make decent inside so i wont hate driving it to work sometimes in the morning. the little details are kind of important to me on this one since its not just another disaster of uncomfortability inside that im only using for the trail. im having a problem with the light for the heater control panel. according to the wiring diagrams i have in my service manual, i have found the correct wires for the light. i forget exactly what the colors were, i think red/black and green ring a bell though. anyway i have no power at the green side which should be the hot according to the schematic. if i unplug the wires from the dash cluster and find the right wire for the dash lights, which is the same color and same circuit as the heater lights, the dash light comes up hot with a test light. i tried to run a jumper wire from the dash light wire to the heater light wire and blows a 15 amp fuse. if these 2 lights are on the same circuit why is it doing this and more importanly how can i fix the heater light with out hacking my harness up?? i really dont want to run a jumper wire but i will if i have to.

run a small 18 gauge wire from any working dash light and add a similar bulb behind the heater/ fan panel...junk yards have tons of em...i think all toyotas from 81-90 will fit.

bulbs can be found at radio shack. even LEDs would work if you get the correct voltage.
