I recently purchased a 1989 Toyota 4x4 truck. When I purchased it, everything worked fine on it. One evening I went out to drive it to work and the headlights wouldn't come on. All other lights, including the dash lights, tail lights, parking lights, etc. work fine with the exception of the headlights. Also, the high beam indicator on the dash doesn't light up anymore. I checked all the fuses and they are good. I replaced the headlight relay and even replaced the light switch on the steering column, but still no headlights or high beam indicator. Does anyone have any idea where to look next? There seems to be several posts on the internet with individuals having the same problem, but none have the closure as to whether they solved the problem or not. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

 

I wanted to let you all know that this problem has been solved. I took it to a Toyota wire guy here in Washington who does this on the side and he found the problem. There were corroded wires located in the wiring harness inside the front passenger wheel well adjacent to the battery. The wiring harness travels from the engine compartment and into the wheel well through a hole near the battery. He said that apparently some mud, water, etc had got onto the wires from inside the right front wheel well and had corroded the wires. He replaced the corroded wires and the lights and high beam indicator are now functioning again. I thought this might help some of you who may be having the same issue. It may be a place to look anyway.

Thanks for sharing what you did to fix the problem. It is highly-appreciated. Some people stay quiet after they have fixed their problem and do not care to share the solution.
Often times, electrical problems are caused by corroded connectors and broken/corroded wiring. That's why we stress to inspect thoroughly (using our senses that came free), look at schematic and use the multi-meter first, instead of wildly guessing and replacing parts left and right.
