charging issues / alt swap questions???
Swapped a 1980 cab on my 1983 truck. Both wiring harness' were crap so I ended up splicing and making my own. Blew the alternator (black plug), It was charging but stopped! I have a spare but its different, green plug?
Don't know what else to do? Can anyone explain the charging system and wire placement in laysman terms? toyota wireing diagrams are not my forte`
Should I put a whole new wireing harness in?
What about a toyota 22re internally regulated swap?
Chevy one wire swap (has it been done and how)?
Any help would be great!!! Need it on the road ASAP!

Update?
I put in the green plug alternator I had lying around. It bypassed the regulator I guess? Was putting out 17+ Volts. So I'm gonna buy a new black plug alternator I guess? Also tore apart the harness tracing wires. I followed one off the regulator plug (RED) and it goes into the cab and then splits into three wires both new wires black with yellow stripe. One goes around to passenger fender and wasn't hooked up to anything. Does anybody know if its supposed too? Is that the wire that excites the alternator? Called my buddy and all wires on the regulator appear to be correct?
HELP!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I haven't done a Chev alt swap, but they're available up to around 90A, possibly more. They are a 1 wire setup: Battery voltage to the alternator. It's internally regulated - give it 12 volts and spin it, it'll do the rest. Mounting it is up to you to fab/search.
Take your old alternator to Pep Boys or whomever and have them test it. That'll tell you if the problem is the alt or your wiring.

I have the same problem as you, but i said screw it after changing everything.
My battery sits @ 15volts all the time now, and when running its at about 17. Its a sealed spiral battery so it wont boil over, just dreading the day when it explodes and then the 10year warrenty come in handy.
But its a new Alt. and regulator too. Theres 4 different Regulators for these things. 2 5prong and 2 6prong. Never tried any of the 6prongs since my wiring is only 5, but theres a IC regulator and some 'other'. The other makes my system charge @ 20volts so i figured it wasnt the right one, the IC charges @ 17...... My charge light is always on, but not the brake light. It been like this for 2 months now and hasnt giving me one issue yet, and my headlights seem much brighter too

Update!!!
Put in a new black plug alternator and regulator. Everything appears to be okay but some how the alternator went bad before? Just maybe this was a Coincidence? Gotta get all the wiring back together and get a water gauge installed and we'll see what it does?
Thanks for all the help so far!
