86 4runner electrical problem

First of its got a 22re in it. I will explain what happen. It started off with the temp. and gas gauges quit working , it still ran for a day but then the wife was driving it to work and it totally died on her. I got it jumped started but now the gauges still don't work and the turn signal don't work and the back window wont go down.Head lights ,tail lights ,flashers and radio still work. So I took it to Auto Zone so they could test the electrical system ,the alternator was only putting out 7.5 amps at any rpm ,it didn't change. So I put a new alternator on ,got it running still the things that didn't work are still not working. I have checked fuses , all grounds (that i could find) and pulled all plugs apart and cleaned with electrical cleaner. I drove it for 2 days then one morning it was foggy so I had the head lights and wipers running at the same time and it died on me. Now this is the common denominator when it died on the wife she had the lights and wipers on. Seams like when its pulling to much amperage it kills it. Any ideas ? This thing is driving me nuts trying to figure it out.

it almost sounds like you have 2 problems. how is the battery? Is it new? Is it maintenance free, or do you need to fill the cells with DI water? Are you SURE all fuses are happy? Do the battery terminals have ANY corrosion? Have you changed the battery cables? Corrosion can be mysterious inside the cables, and at the terminals.

The battery was a little low on water in all cells so I filled it . I did not replace the battery cables but I cleaned the post on pos. and neg. then put a new clamp on pos. side. I pulled all fuses made sure they looked good and even pulled fuse block under hood and inspected the under side to make sure no wires came loose .

Take the battery to your local auto store and have them load test it. Number 2, check continuity between the fuse block and the peripheral(s) not responding. Third, check the ignition relay on the passenger inside the fender under the bonnet. It is the little zinc coated box nearest the firewall. It has printed on it "ignition relay". I had to replace mine with a similar issue of starting, but it manifested differently. I bought a replacement HotShot from Summit Racing for 20 some bucks. I have an extra if you need I can send it to you. These ignition issues can be a bear to work on.

I will check out the relay thank you for your help. I don't think its the battery and I only say this because I took the battery out of my Tacoma and tried it . That being said i will still get it checked . I will let you know how it goes.

I'm more of a fabricator than a mechanic .I built the bumper and skid plate on my Tacoma.

I put my Tacoma battery in the 4runner when this all started .I didn't test the relay. I'm not sure how to test the relay.

Check the charge fuse. Its in the driverside kickpanel; should be a 15A in the middle on the bottom. Take the cover off and you'll see what I'm saying.

It controls the output of the alternator, the turn signals, the instraments and instrament lights, and the power to the rear window.

Never understood why Toyota wires so many things on one fuse, especially the rear window.

Yea we have the same nightmare. Sometimes mine will last 3 days or sometimes will blow 3 times a day. I think there is a short in one of the circuits it controls but havent found anything yet.

You know, if you are getting a short-circuit issue now, it may be a beginning to a larger problem. It may be a good idea to get new wiring harnesses and replace as much as you can. I imagine the insulation on most of your wiring is quite brittle.

Was looking for a short in the wires last night and noticed some of the wires going to the turn signals and been taped into by the last owner. He must of had a alarm system on it and just cut the wires off and left them hang. Don't know if the turn signal could be shorting out there but I cut the wires off and taped them up good so we will see what happens .I drove it to work today with no problems yet .
