I have an 81 Toy 4x4 5 speed and the 4WD indicator light wasn't working. After doing a continuity, I needed to do something with it. After exhausting all searches for a new one, I decided to try and repair mine. In looking at the makeup of the switch, I needed to grind off the lip over the back to gain access to the black plastic cylinder. Using my bench grinder to get most of it off, I then turned to my Dremel with a rotary round bit. Once that was done the cylinder would just slide out of it's housing. Be careful not to loose the two springs when pulling it out. I found it is surprising simple in design. Just 5 pieces internally as seen in the pic 1.
I cleaned the contacts on the little brass disc with contact cleaner and a piece of white Scotch Brite pad. Also soldered new leads to the contacts, as they were frayed. Added some heat shrink for protection.
Put the springs in the little cups, put the contact pad in, alinging the two pins into the slots in the housing. This operation needs to be done with cylinder and parts held up with one hand. The metal housing and pin held in the other and drop it over the cylinder. I held it with it assembled, pin down and put the whole thing into my desktop vise. Holding the cylinder down as far as it goes into the housing, I added hot melt glue to the surface of the cylinder that locks it in and protects against moisture. Did an operational continuity test and what do you know, IT WORKS. Saved a bunch of money and time. Hope this writeup helps other in the same boat, in the future as parts are getting harder to find for these Toy trucks.
