Please help! 3rd gen 4runner alarm reset

Please help, I'm desperate! I've searched for hours on threads about this topic, however none of the solutions I've read helped my situation.

I have a 1998 (3rd gen) 4runner.

I recently replaced the alternator, but when I reconnect the battery, the alarm sounds and the starter wont engage. The alarm sound is not the horn.

Now, when I have the ignition on and I reconnect the battery, the alarm doesnt sound, however, the marker lights blink and the red LED on the dash blinks.

When I attempted to engage the starter in this condition, the alarm quickly chirped three times. When I attempted to do anything else in this condition (open doors, close the hood, remove the key from ignition) the alarm sounds.

I've looked hard for any type of valet/alarm reset switch, and the only thing I've found was an odd switch in the fuse box. Experimenting with this switch resulted in nothing.

There is no button on the dash. Only the red alarm LED to the left of the steering column-

the led and toggle switch are not from a factory alarm system, they appear to be aftermarket. take down the lower dash panel, and you should hopefully be able to see the brain for the aftermarket alarm. you can either just unplug the main harness to the alarm, or eliminate the alram wiring entirely, to prevent any possible issues later on down the road. The aftermarket alarm seemingly has a starter kill, and you need to eliminate that.

the starter wire for your 4runner should be black, and coming off of the factory ignition harness. you will most likely see that the wire has been cut and coneected to two other seperate wires going to some sort of a relay (starter kill) just eliminate those two wires from the picture, and re connect the black wire together. this should fix your issue.

good luck

after going back and looking at the pictures again, it appears that the brain for the aftermarket system is the black box in the picture behind the toggle switch, and along side of the fuse box. see if you can get the underdash opened and take some more pics of that

Maybe there is more to it, but can't you just turn key on and flip switch to get it in bypass mode?
I basically have the same set up on mine and whenever I have to disconnect and re-connect battery my alarm goes off.
so I just turn key off and then back on and flip switch, red light goes solid and I'm in bypass mode.

I just removed the brain, all was good. It was indeed the black box to the right of the fuse panel

i would still suggest eliminating the starter kill completely and re connect your starter wire to one solid piece, just to be safe. it wont take much time or require a lot of effort. in reality it should make no difference since it is a normally closed relay, that would only open the circuit if the alarm went off, but its always better to take a few minutes now, rather than be sorry some time later.
